Kurt Busch Quickest in Second Sprint Cup Practice at Charlotte


CONCORD, N.C. — Kurt Busch drove his No. 41 Monster Energy/Haas Automation Chevrolet to the top of the speed charts in the second NASCAR Sprint Cup Series practice Saturday morning at Charlotte Motor Speedway. The Stewart-Haas Racing driver ran a 28.2722 lap at 191.002 mph. Busch holds the track qualifying record of 198.771 mph, a 27.167 seconds lap, set on Oct. 9, 2014.

Hendrick Motorsports’ Jimmie Johnson, a seven-time winner at Charlotte, was second fastest in his No. 48 Lowes Patriotic Chevrolet with a speed of 190.617 mph. Martin Truex Jr. was third in his No. 78 Furniture Row Racing Toyota with a lap time of 28.412 at 190.061 mph.

Carl Edwards, the defending 2015 race winner, posted the fourth quickest speed of 189.887 in his No. 19 Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota while Ricky Stenhouse Jr. was fifth in his No. 17  Roush Fenway Racing Ford.

Rookie Chase Elliott was sixth in the No. 24 NAPA Auto Parts Chevrolet with a lap speed of 189.381 followed by Kevin Harvick who was seventh fastest in his SHR Jimmy John’s Chevy and Kyle Larson rounded out the top five with a time of 28.310 and a speed of 190.745 in the Chip Ganassi Racing No. 42 Target Chevrolet.

Ryan Blaney, another candidate for Rookie of the Year, was eighth on the speed charts (188.383 mph) in his No. 21 Ford for Wood Brothers Racing as Ryan Newman was ninth in the No. 31  with a lap speed of 188.252.

Chip Ganassi Racing driver, Kyle Larson,  was 10th quickest in his No. 42 Target Chevrolet at 188.239 mph. Martin Truex Jr. had the best 10 consecutive lap average with an average speed of 186.625 mph.

The NASCAR Sprint Cup Series final practice will be 1-1:50 p.m. on FS1.
