Clint Bowyer Sees Hometown Run Spoiled by Heavy Contact with Wall

With Michael Waltrip Racing set to close their doors at the end of the season, Clint Bowyer has expressed the want to give the employees a win before heading off to HScott Motorsports for 2016. Unfortunately, heavy contact with the wall on lap 171 would see Bowyer’s day at Kansas Speedway end early.

The Emporia, Kansas native would get loose in the middle of the corner, over-correcting the car as he came off turn two and turning back up into the outside wall.

“I was following (Jeff) Gordon there and I started to catch him back,” Bowyer recalled. “I went in and he kind of took my line away and I tried to pull down and as soon as my headlight got out and got some air in it, man it turned me.”

Bowyer admitted afterward that he “probably should have just spun to the inside,” but he thought he could save it.

“You usually can ride it along, but that thing came out from underneath of me so fast,” he added. “As soon as that headlight got some air in it, boy that baby bit and turned me around pretty quick.”

For Bowyer, the season hasn’t gone as he hoped as he barely qualified for the Chase for the Sprint Cup, suffering a penalty following the first race at Chicago that saw him eliminated after the first round. He currently sits 16th in points with only two top-fives on the season.
