Cope Twins to Try and Make NASCAR History Again in 2011; Will Attempt First Nationwide Series Starts at Iowa SpeedwayBy Official Release
Odyssey® Batteries by EnerSys® Steps Up Again as Co-Sponsor of Twins; Joined by Warrior Energy, Other Sponsors of Nieces of Daytona 500 Champ Derrike Cope
The duet, which made history last season by becoming the first twins to ever race against each other in one of NASCAR’s top three divisions by competing in a Camping World Truck Series race at Martinsville last October, make their return to NASCAR at the beautiful 7/8-mile tri-oval in Newton, IA, just 30 miles east off Des Moines, IA.
The twins, nieces of 1990 Daytona 500 Champion Derrike Cope, will be driving for a new team in Keystone Motorsports. Amber will pilot a No. 93 Ford while Angela will behind the wheel of a No. 94 Chevrolet. The team plans to also run the Nationwide Series race at Kentucky Speedway in July, with hopes of competing in more races later in 2011.
ODYSSEY® batteries (http://www.odysseybattery.com/), which served as a major sponsor for their history making run at Martinsville, is back again as a co-primary on both cars to support the 27-year-olds from Puyallup, Washington, in their Nationwide Series debut. The ODYSSEY® battery logo will occupy the hood and TV panel on one car while the other will have ODYSSEY® battery logos on the rear quarter panels and rear deck lid.
Joining ODYSSEY® batteries as corporate supporters are: Warrior Energy (www.drinkwarrior.com), an all natural, low calorie, low glycemic tea-based drink company; El’le Hydro Salon Specialties (http://www.eliehydro.com/), a leader in personal care products; Matrix System Automotive Finishes (www.matrixsys.com), which are high performance, low cost automotive paint products; and Xinergy (http://www.xinergycorp.com/), a coal mining company in Kentucky and West Virginia.
“Without ODYSSEY® batteries we would not have been able to make our first NASCAR start at Martinsville,” said Angela Cope. “Now they are back in a larger role, plus we have many others who are supporting us and we can’t say ‘thanks’ enough. We now have another opportunity to make a name for ourselves in the sport. We have a solid, young team with good equipment and feel this is just the beginning for us in the sport.”
“This is what Angela and I have wanted to do since we were nine years old racing go carts,” added Amber. “When we moved here to North Carolina six years ago, our goal was to race stock cars. Now is our chance. We can’t wait to get to Iowa.”
“They kept their noses clean last year at Martinsville,” said Derrike, who has been both a mentor and coach to the twins in their goal to make it in NASCAR. “They were patient during the race, got some track time and finished 26th (Amber) and 30th (Angela). They have the talent and need this opportunity.”
The Twins’ resume includes countless go-cart victories and multiple championships. Since moving east they have competed in super late models and ARCA.
Opening practice for the Iowa race is set for Friday, May 20, with qualifying on Saturday, May 21, at 4:40 p.m. (EST). The race gets the green flag on Sunday, May 22, at 2 p.m. (EST).
