Just 17 laps into the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series SFP 250, the motor coughed in Ross Chastain’s Florida Watermelon Association Toyota and sent the Sunoco Rookie of the Year candidate to the garage ending his day well short of the checkered flag in 34th place.

Ross qualified the Florida Watermelon Association Tundra 24th on Saturday morning with a lap of 32.10 seconds at 168.19 mph on the mile and a half speedway.

At the drop of the green flag things looked good for the young Floridian as his Toyota Tundra moved up several spots in the running order working towards the top-fifteen until lap seventeen when the powerplant in his Toyota sputtered and lost power; ending the day for the SS Green Light Racing team.

“We were just a little tight from the center-off, but we were a top-fifteen truck at that point in the race,” he continued. “I think with one adjustment we could have been a top-ten truck.”

“I came off of turn number two and it just coughed for about two seconds and just shut off,” Chastain said. “It dumped all the water out the tailpipes. There wasn’t any warning, no vibration or anything.”

Tundra. “The motor had plenty of power at the start of the race, I really thought we had a chance to do something good, but it wasn’t meant to be. We just need to get a little good luck and we’ll get this turned around.”

Chastain dropped from 14th to 19th in the NCWTS driver standings after four of twenty-two races in the 2012 NCWTS campaign.

“Bryan (crew chief Bryan Berry) said we have three weeks before Charlotte to get back to the shop and get the new truck we ‘re building for the race there. Hopefully we’ll have time to get it to the wind tunnel and see exactly what we have before the race. We’re trying to build a little more speed into this Toyota. The truck we had a Kansas had a lot of downforce, we’re going to try to find a little more speed.”

The next NCWTS race for Chastain and the SS Green Light Racing team will be the North Carolina Education Lottery 200 on May 18, 2012 at the Charlotte Motor Speedway. The Florida Watermelon Association will once again support Chastain at Charlotte.
