McCumbee, RBR team earn hard-fought top-25 at Bristol

By Official Release On Thu, Aug. 23, 2012

Bristol, Tenn. (August 23, 2012) – While not the finish the No. 92 Black’s Tire and Auto Service/fleetHQ.com/QMI Chevrolet team was looking for at Bristol Motor Speedway in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series (NCWTS) UNOH 200, the trip to Northeastern Tennessee was not a bad one for the Ricky Benton Racing (RBR) Enterprises crew and driver Chad McCumbee.

“The guys did a great job getting this truck better all day,” said McCumbee. “We were extremely tight when we unloaded, but (crew chief Kevin) Cowboy (Starland) and the whole crew made some good changes to the truck during practice. We ended up being a bit free at the start of the race.”

With the long green 83-lap green flag run at the beginning of the race, the team was not able to make the needed adjustments and lost a lap to the leader. When the checkered flag fell, McCumbee had piloted the No. 92 to the 23rd position.

“With the changes to the racing surface, track position was at a premium,” said Starland. “I think (Timothy) Peters proved that by leading every lap. We just got behind it a bit at the beginning and that long run did us in.

“Later in the night, when we were running by ourselves, we were as fast as the trucks running in the top five.”

The driver liked the way the truck was trending at the end of the race.

“We made some good gains this week,” McCumbee said. “The communication between Cowboy and me is getting better. Every time we needed to make an adjustment it was the right one.

“It’ll only get better from here.”

The Black’s Tire and Auto Service/fleetHQ.com/QMI team and McCumbee will be back in action next week at Atlanta for the Jeff Foxworthy’s Grit Chips 200.
