As part of the McColl Racing Enterprise’s Open House on December 15th, it was announced that Kevin Cornelius will run a M.R.E OSCAAR Super Late Model chassis full-time in 2013.
“Really excited about the 2013 race season,” the Orangeville, Ontario native said. “I would have to go back to 1996 when I was in my first race at Sauble Speedway to compare the excitement. Really looking forward to racing in what I consider to be one of the top series in Ontario with the toughest competition with guys like Glenn and Brandon Waston , George Wilson , Derek Tiemersma, Rob Clarke, Rob Poole and the list goes on.
“I think OSCAAR is on the verge of getting real big and that Dave (Gainforth) and the group are heading in the right direction.”
Known as Ontario’s premiere late model touring division, the OSCAAR Super Late Models tour across the province, going to a variety of tracks in a compact 13 race schedule.
The 2011 Sunset Speedway Champion will make the move up to OSCAAR after running eight seasons in the Late Model ranks. The decision was made following the success the past two seasons and the want for a shorter schedule.
“I’m already starting to feel a lot of pressure to perform in a super late,” Cornelius adds. “It was my decision to move up to OSCAAR and I know the guys were reluctant on making the move so I feel I have to prove to them that it was a good move.”
It marks the first time that M.R.E has built an OSCAAR chassis after years of success in the Late Model ranks across Ontario and in the NASCAR Canadian Tire Series.
“Having the support of M.R.E and being that this is their first super late it adds a ton of pressure as well,” Cornelius continues. “Mike McColl is a guy I have a ton of respect for and I would hate to feel as tho I was letting him down.”
While there is a change in making the move to OSCAAR, there have also been some changes within the team.
“We also had our crew chief Grant Mitchell step down and take a lesser roll on the team which was a big hit for us as Grant was a very important part in the success we had at Sunset Speedway,” he says. “But we were very fortunate to have Ed Almand step in and take over the crew chief role, so real excited about working with him.
“Gonna miss a lot of things about Sunset but gonna enjoy traveling to various tracks throughout southern Ontario and the challenges that each track offers.”
Special thanks to the sponsors for their continued support: Halton Crushed Stone Lee Sand and Gravel, Hanson Concrete Products, Sandbox Tech Child Care, Alliston Transmission and Ed’s Automotive. Also, we are pleased to welcome aboard Triple Concrete and MacMaster Buick GMC Orangeville for the 2013 season.
Thanks to the fans for their continued support.
The full OSCAAR has yet to be released yet, though promises to be an action packed season of traveling across Ontario, including five stops at Sunset Speedway. For more information on OSCAAR, check out http://www.oscaar.ca.
