NASCAR Sprint Cup and MIS on location at the Canadian Motorsports Expo

MichiganBROOKLYN, Mich. (Feb. 5, 2013) – The NASCAR Sprint Cup Trophy travels through Customs this week on its trek to the Canadian Motorsports Expo in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. The championship trophy will be on display Friday through Sunday in the Michigan International Speedway display at the event.

Fans are invited to stop by to see the iconic trophy and snap a few pictures with it. The trophy is annually presented to the champion in NASCAR’s premiere division. Now is your chance to feel the excitement Brad Keselowski did when he won the 2012 NASCAR Sprint Cup Championship.

Rochester Hills, Mich., native Keselowski became the first Michigan-born driver to win the award. It was also the first NASCAR championship for team owner Roger Penske. The season-long championship battle came down to the final race of the year with Keselowski taking the top honors.

MIS President Roger Curtis will also be in attendance at the event to greet the fans at the display. Canadians make up nearly 20 percent of the crowd on race weekend at MIS and the track is honored to take a piece of NASCAR to our fans.

“It has been fun taking the trophy around to display so fans can see it,” Curtis said. “I am looking forward to bringing the trophy to Canada and talking to the fans at the Canadian Motorsports Expo. Each year thousands of fans come to Michigan International Speedway to watch the races and this is our way to bring NASCAR to Canada.”

The event is sure to be a great time for all fans to recap their favorite memories from the 2012 season and look forward to the 2013 campaign. In addition, NASCAR has introduced the Gen-6 car that looks more like a showroom car and the Chevrolet SS will be on display at the event.

With the Gen-6 NASCAR stock car making its debut in 2013, fans at the two-mile MIS will witness a return to the roots of the sport where competitors turned street cars into race cars.  The Gen-6 cars look very close to their manufacturers’ street car models – Ford Fusion, Chevy SS and Toyota Camry. And driver feedback in winter testing has been overwhelmingly positive for exciting, edge-of-your-seat thrills.

The NASCAR season starts with the Sprint Unlimited on Feb. 16 and the Daytona 500 is on Feb. 24.

The NASCAR Sprint Cup Series will make a pair of stops at MIS in 2013. The opening race will once again be on Father’s Day weekend for the Quicken Loans 400 on June 16. The Pure Michigan 400 will take place on Aug. 18 and annually serves as an important race prior to The Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup.

In 2012, Dale Earnhardt Jr. won the Quicken Loans 400. His last two victories in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series have come at MIS. Greg Biffle won the Pure Michigan 400 in August to give Roush Fenway Racing its 12th victory in the Irish Hills, the most of any organization at MIS.

The seventh annual Canadian Motorsports Expo Powered by Inside Track Motorsport News takes place Friday through Sunday at Toronto’s International Centre, adjacent to Pearson International Airport. The show features motorsports content geared to racers and fans. This year’s celebrity guests include NASCAR stars Kyle Busch, two-time Daytona 500 champion Michael Waltrip and Canadian racing legend Ron Fellows. The show will also feature an appearance by JP Tremblay, Mike Smith and Robb Wells, the stars of TV’s Trailer Park Boys.

Nestled in the lush Irish Hills of Southeastern Michigan, Michigan International Speedway is the Great Escape, a venerable NASCAR national park where fans can get away and enjoy the very best in racing and camaraderie. It’s the love of racing and the thrill of a great time for race fans and drivers alike.
