He ultimately finished 30th.

AUSTIN DILLON QUOTES:

How do you feel about the new qualifying format at a road course like Sonoma Raceway?

“Knockout qualifying will definitely be interesting. I’ve never been to Sonoma Raceway. It will definitely be a rookie going there. It’s a track I’ve never been to on the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series circuit. When I get there, there will be a learning curve. We’ll shut that timing and scoring system off and just try and get me better as a driver. We’ll work hard the entire time. From what I’ve heard, tires are everything so qualifying will probably be one or two laps and that will be your fastest lap.”

When you go to a track that you’ve never been to before, what kinds of things do you do to try and get ready?

“You try and research the track as much as possible. I’ve got Max Papis, who has run there before, I use notes from him. I’m going to go out a little early to run the NASCAR K&N Pro Series West Race. I’ll be out there a few extra days just to kind of get a hold of the track.”

Looking Back … In last year’s 110-lap race, Menard started the No. 27 Chevrolet from the 16th position and was relegated to a 14th-place finish after fighting handling issues during the event.

PAUL MENARD QUOTE:

What are your thoughts on racing at Sonoma Raceway?

“I enjoy racing at Sonoma (Raceway). This year we are bringing a brand new chassis, so I’m interested to see what happens. I wouldn’t mind if we had a couple more road course races on the schedule to break up the oval racing a bit. Racing in Sonoma and Watkins Glen (International) is a lot different from what we do week-to-week. There is a lot of shifting involved and we make both right and left turns. I would say the key here is to keep the car on course.”

Ryan Newman

No. 31 Caterpillar Chevrolet SS
Event Preview Fact Sheet

This Week’s Caterpillar Chevrolet SS at Sonoma Raceway … Ryan Newman will drive chassis No. 471 on Sunday at Sonoma Raceway. Chassis No. 471 is brand new and will take to the track during Friday’s two scheduled practice sessions.

He has led 11 laps and completed all 1,327 laps of competition. The South Bend, Ind., native has an average start of 13th and average finish of 13th. In the last six races at the road course, the RCR driver ranks fifth in most points earned.

About Caterpillar … For nearly 90 years, Caterpillar Inc. has been making sustainable progress possible and driving positive change on every continent.  Customers turn to Caterpillar to help them develop infrastructure, energy and natural resource assets. Caterpillar is the world’s leading manufacturer of construction and mining equipment, diesel and natural gas engines, industrial gas turbines and diesel-electric locomotives. Point of Interest … Newman ranks 11th in the Sprint Cup Series championship point standings, just six markers out of 10th and trailing the current leader by 97 points entering the 16th event on the schedule, the Save Mart 350 at Sonoma Raceway.

Race Rewind … Last season, Newman overcame a disappointing qualifying effort of 30th and a throttle problem to finish 15th.

RYAN NEWMAN QUOTES:

What are your thoughts on road-course racing at Sonoma?

“Sonoma presents a different kind of challenge for us because track position is so very important. You get a very limited number of opportunities to make your car better, as well as make up track position. If you have one bad pit stop, it pretty much takes you out of the hunt. You have to have a really good race car. Sonoma presents a different kind of racing not just because it’s road-course racing, but the number of pit stops we make.”

What is the key to Sonoma?

“It’s pretty simple, you have to keep it on the race track. You have to have a fast car. You have to do everything right like you have to do at every track, but you have about 13 different opportunities through the course of one lap to get off the track. There is no guidance or wall so-to-speak to keep you on the track, so hanging a tire in the gravel can really ruin your day.”

What is the hardest part to you about road-racing?

“It’s a combination of being aggressive and having that finesse to keep the car going with so many turns to keep it going straight, because that’s how you get back to the start/finish line.”

BRIAN SCOTT QUOTES:

What are your thoughts about turning right and left?

“I love Road America. It’s such a neat part of the country and such a neat race track. I’ve had good success there in the past. I like road courses. I’m really looking forward to racing there because it’s going to be a lot of fun.”

What is the trickiest part around Road America?

“To me, Canada corner is the most difficult. It’s really bumpy and it’s real easy to get on the splitter or lock up a tire, or wheel hop. There are a lot of variables when you go into that corner and anything can happen from front to rear. It’s always a deep breaking spot, a good spot to pass in the race, but just a difficult spot. If you are going to lock up a tire, it will be in that corner.”

Ty Dillon
No. 3 Bass Pro Shops/TRACKER Boats Chevrolet Camaro
Event Preview Fact Sheet

This Week’s Bass Pro Shops/TRACKER Boats Chevrolet at Road America … This weekend Ty Dillon will race chassis No. 133 at Road America. This Richard Childress Racing-prepared Camaro was raced last season at Watkins Glen with driver Austin Dillon.

Dillon in the NASCAR Nationwide Series at Road America … As the Nationwide Series heads to the first of three road-course races this season, Dillon is making his career debut at the four-mile track. Dillon has made only two previous road course starts – a 17th-place finish last season at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series and an eighth-place finish at New Jersey Motorsports Park in the ARCA Series presented by Menards.

Learning to turn right … Dillon has been sharpening his road course skills over the past several weeks. He participated in the Ron Fellows Driving School on May 5, tested at Virginia International Raceway on May 27, and is scheduled to participate in the Trans-Am Series Test on Thursday, June 19 at Road America.

Bass Pro Shops & RCR in 2014 … Bass Pro Shops will be on the No. 3 Bass Pro Shops Chevrolet Camaro for the fourth time this season as a primary sponsor. America’s No. 1 Outdoor Retailer has been a long time partner of RCR, including last season with Dillon in the Camping World Truck Series.

rewind … Dillon qualified third, led the first lap of competition and remained around the top-10 for the reminder of the 125-lap event. In the end, the Welcome, N.C. native was able to cross the finish line ninth for the team’s 10th top-10 finish of the season. Dillon was credited for nine laps led.

Points update … The 22-year-old driver moved up to fourth place in the driver point standings, trailing the leader by only 35 points. Also competing for the Sunoco Rookie of the Year award, Dillon is in second-place.

TY DILLON QUOTE:

How are your road course skills?

“This is always an exciting part of our schedule and it gives us a different type of race track to visit. I’ve been working hard at getting some laps in at a few different road courses and listening to advice from other drivers. It’s going to be a challenge, no doubt, but I think our team should be pretty competitive.”
Brendan Gaughan
No. 62 South Point Hotel & Casino Chevrolet Camaro
Event Preview Fact Sheet

This Week’s South Point Hotel & Casino Chevrolet at Road America… Brendan Gaughan will pilot chassis No. 143 in the NASCAR Nationwide Series Gardner Denver 200 at Road America. This No. 62 South Point Hotel & Casino road course car is a new addition to the Richard Childress Racing stable.

Gaughan’s Stats at Road America …The 38-year-old RCR driver is scheduled to make his third Nationwide Series start at the four-mile road course on Saturday. In Gaughan’s prior starts, he averages a 16th-place starting position and a seventh-place finishing position. He has completed 100 percent of the laps ran and earned a third-place finish in June 2010.

In the Rearview Mirror: Michigan International Speedway … Last weekend at Michigan International Speedway, Brendan Gaughan and the No. 62 RCR team qualified 16th for the Ollie’s Bargain Outlet 250. The team gambled with fuel strategy and came up one lap short at the end of the race, bringing home a 22nd-place finish.

To the Points …Gaughan and the No. 62 South Point Hotel & Casino team remain seventh in the Nationwide Series driver point standing as the Series heads to the first road-course race of the season.

Where To Meet Brendan Gaughan … On Friday, June 20, Gaughan will be taking part in the Nationwide Series driver autograph session from 4 to 5 p.m. Central Time at Road America, in front of the media center.

BRENDAN GAUGHAN QUOTES:

What are your thoughts on road racing?

“I love Road America. I have loved it since I went there with Rusty (Wallace) for the first time in a stock car. I have been there a bunch in old sports cars and open wheel. It is one of my favorite road courses in America and actually the world. We are going there with guns loaded and plan on being really strong at Road America.”

What is the toughest turn at Road America?

“I think the toughest corner that nobody talks about is Turn 5. Its downhill, which is an all-brake zone, with a hard left that is all uphill to another hard corner. A lot of passing happens between Turn 5 and Turn 6 and a lot of the wrecks you will see happen there, as well.”

Do you have to be on offense or defense at a road course?

“It just depends on where you are in the corner, if you are in the lead you better play a little defense. But, if you are in a pack of cars you have to try and pass the guy in front of you and take advantage. If you have a guy right on your bumper, you first need to know who you are racing,.If you are racing someone who has a lot of road course experience, then you can breathe a little easier. But, if it is someone that doesn’t have a lot of road course experience, you have to be prepared for them to lock up the brakes or slide too far and make a mistake.”
