Coca-Cola 600 - With a Twist
|
For years, the Coca Cola 600 has been won by a
car that was not leading at the 500-mile mark. Engine durability
has traditionally been the chief deciding factor for the
600-mile endurance race. When lights were added to Lowe’s
Speedway, chassis set up became the second most important factor
as the teams had to chase the setup as the track tightened up as
the sun set. Crews were tasked with finding a competitive
setup for the start of the race in the daylight, and finding an
expedient method of changing the car’s setup to handle the track
changes with the cooler temperatures of night.
This year’s race adds another twist. Chassis setup is still
of high importance compounded by the new harder compound tires
that Goodyear is supplying for the event coupled with the
smaller fuel cells effecting the weight distribution of the
cars. The positive side about chasing the setup is that teams
have 600-miles to work it out versus 500-miles.
A third factor will figure into deciding who wins the
Coca-Cola 600 this year. With the traditional 22-gallon fuel
cells used in years past, teams averaged 8-10 pit stops to go
the distance. With the 14-gallon cells mandated by NASCAR for
this year’s running of the 600, teams will be forced to pit
15-17 times, effectively doubling the number of pit stops from
years past. The increased number of stops will put an increase
of pressure on the crews to bust off lightning fast pit stops
over and over again and increase the chance of a slight miscue
in the pits playing into deciding the race’s winner. This year’s
race winner will prove that their engine shop, pit crew, and
crew chief are on top of their game. |
