Hardball: Fans React when NASCAR Doesn't
The 29 car got away with
murder last weekend. They got to work on
their car during a red flag until Felix
Sabates pointed out the infraction. Fans
also noted that the 29 car was being
worked on during the red flag. Here are
a couple of emails prompted by my last
article.
Dear Paul, It looks
like you, Felix and I are the only ones
outraged by the #29 Team’s working on
the car under red. I mentioned this to
my friends while this was going on, and
they looked at me like I'd suddenly
grown a third ear! Doesn't anyone
remember not so many years ago when
Sterling Marlin yanked on his fender
under a red flag? The howls of outrage
mixed with laughter are still ringing in
my ears!

Just shows how his
majesty Brian will bend the rules to
help the "young guns" and his WWE form
of racing. I wonder what he will do to
make sure Earnhardt gets in?

It's nice to see that I'm not alone
in my belief that Robby Gordon's teams
get singled out by NASCAR with harsher
penalties than any other team. Lee
Spencer of Fox Sports exposed NASCAR for
setting Robby up at The Glen in her
column from Monday. If NASCAR thinks
that fans aren't paying attention it's
time for them to get a clue. Some fans
are so fed up by the bully and unfair
tactics they are obviously tuning out
and staying away from races. If NASCAR
is playing chicken with fans they might
not like who wins at the game.
Thanks for your column. Barb
NASCAR is losing its fan base in droves.
You can try to find one big reason but
the fact is it is a lot of little
reasons. Bad calls or non calls like
this issue fall into the race
orchestration realm of theories. Race
orchestration links NASCAR to WWE. WWE
is synonymous with fixed wrestling
matches.
Another big issue with
NASCAR fan alienation is the Young Guns.
The 40 + fan base has fewer drivers to
support. With Earnhardt Sr., Terry
Labonte, Rusty Wallace, Bill Elliot and
a host of other drivers gone from the
week to week racing the older fan has
few drivers to relate to. The Young Guns
like Harvick and the Bash Brothers, Kurt
and Kyle just aren’t what the older fan
base wants. Thankfully Terry Labonte and
Bill Elliot are running a few races.
But back to the issue at
hand rules and fairness. Was NASCAR fair
to Robby Gordon? Was it fair to the
other competitors to let the 29 crew
work on their car during a red flag? Is
it fair to fine one driver for a flag
infraction and not another? Welcome to
WWE NASCAR style.
My next article will
cover the meeting of Brian France and
Mike Helton with Legendary Boxing
Promoter Don King. The agenda is as
follows.
8:00 – 8:30 How to get
car drivers to take a fall?
8:30 – 9:00 Appropriate payout amounts
to bribe crew members to flub a pit
stop?
9:00 – 9:30 How to hand out bribe money
without getting caught.
10:00 - Open discussion on fixing
events.
