Dear ole Brian France keeps himself
flattered by the changes he made in the
points system by saying he “is certain
that the Chase to the Nextel Cup is
working, and that the tweaking to the
Chase system that occurred prior to this
season has been a boon to the sport.”
But after reading that interview, I
would have to agree with Jeff Gordon
more than France. You pretty much cannot
measure the drivers championship season
from years prior to the Chase and
present. If the old system was still in
place, Gordon would now be picking up
with sixth championship trophy…… so take
that into consideration.
The points system now in place
basically just awards the team that hits
it right in the final 10 races, not the
entire season. It ignores the system in
place at tracks all over the US that
awards the driver at the end of the
season that EARNS the points throughout
the season…. not given a second chance
at the title. Fair/Unfair? It does not
matter; Mr. France had made his stand.
If Johnson or Gordon would have not
won the championship this season, then
yes the points system would have been a
complete disaster for the sport as we
know it based on the wins and top
performances of both teams throughout
the season.
I am surprised that France didn’t go
with a seven race shoot out….. hmmmmm
sound familiar? Maybe watching too much
Baseball? Or even start a Division
playoff system! Can the California
boys (west) beat the southern Carolina
boys (east)…… hmmm… maybe I have
something Mr. France. But joking aside,
it’s just not right.
Then I read on and he wants “as many
non-team members compete [in the Chase]
as possible”. Sorry but you (France)
created this mess like restrictor plate
racing and less testing, where you have
to have multiple drivers to share
information with. I know, lets save
money and be safer………blah, blah, blah.
Take the points as they are now after
race number 35. Gordon would now have a
344 point lead over Johnson. But you
also have to add in the fact that some
drivers take it a little easy the final
few races just to make sure they make
the top-10. But still, 344 points ahead,
now 89 points behind. Nothing against
Johnson or any of the other drivers, but
geez.
Well back to my title. I hope
France’s eyes are brown, because I at
least know he is full of it. Fair or
unfair, we know NASCAR will review it
and make a judgment call.
Congratulations to Jimmie Johnson and
his team. Job well done! Four in a row….
Wow!
