Six Toyota Camrys started
today’s Pennsylvania 500 at
Pocono Raceway. This marks
the first time six Camrys
have started on an oval in
2007 NASCAR NEXTEL Cup
Series competition. Six
Camrys also started on the
road course at Infineon
Raceway in Sonoma, Calif.
Dave Blaney earned his
second consecutive top-20 in
the No. 22 Caterpillar Camry
with his finish of 20th. A
late-race accident on
lap-182 caused significant
steering damage to the No.
83 Red Bull Camry of Brian
Vickers. Vickers finished
29th. The No. 36 360 OTC
Camry of Jeremy Mayfield
finished 31st in his eighth
start of the season. Michael
Waltrip’s No. 55 NAPA Camry
finished 38th after a
mechanical failure with less
than five laps remaining,
ended his day. The No. 00
Burger King Camry of David
Reutimann finished 41st
after a broken fuel pump
forced him to the garage for
22 laps. Dale Jarrett
finished 42nd in his No. 44
UPS Camry after spending 25
laps in the garage changing
a broken fuel pump. Today’s
race marks the first time
this season that all three
full-time drivers for
Michael Waltrip Racing made
the 43-car field on the
qualifying speeds without
utilizing any provisionals.
Blaney earned the first
NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series
pole for Toyota at New
Hampshire International
Speedway (June 29). The best
Nextel Cup finish for a
Camry this season is when
Vickers finished fifth at
Lowe’s Motor Speedway (May
27). It marked the first
top-five result for Toyota
in Nextel Cup competition.
In addition to Vickers fifth
place finish, he also scored
Toyota’s first top-10 when
he finished 10th at
California Speedway (Feb.
25). Waltrip scored an
additional tenth place
finish in his NAPA Camry at
Michigan International
Speedway (June 17). Blaney
finished ninth last weekend
at Indianapolis Motor
Speedway (July 29), marking
his best career finish at
the speedway.
DAVE BLANEY, No. 22
Caterpillar Toyota Camry,
Bill Davis Racing Finished:
20th Can you talk about your
race today? “We ran okay
today and where we finished
is about what we had today.
We seemed to run 15th to
20th all day and just
couldn’t do any better than
that. When that’s all you’ve
got, you just have to finish
with it and that’s what we
did. It was a smooth day; we
just couldn’t seem to get
fast enough to really get up
there in the top-15. The
guys had great pit stops all
day and they kept me in
position all afternoon. We
struggled a little on the
handling side and a little
on the horsepower side and
that really adds up here
with the straight-aways
being so long. If you’re off
a little in the corners,
it’s just multiplied on the
long straight-aways. It
doesn’t take much to lose a
little ground here. But we
had a solid day and we’ll
get ready for the road
course next week.”
BRIAN VICKERS, No. 83 Red
Bull Toyota Camry, Team Red
Bull Finished: 29th How was
your race today? “We didn’t
get quite where we needed to
be today. When we started
the race we were just too
tight and then we adjusted
to the loose side by the end
of the race. I couldn’t keep
the back of the car under me
there at the end. We were
also fighting a brake issue.
We were heating up the
fronts and the rears were
working too well and that
was locking up the rear
tires. Then we ended up
getting wrecked there at the
end and there was nothing we
could do.” What happened in
the wreck? “I went into the
corner and everyone was
slamming on brakes and
spinning in front of me. I
got on the brakes, but it
was too late and a couple
cars got into me which sent
me into a couple more guys.
It knocked the tow out on
the car and bent the front
up pretty good. We just had
to limp through the final
laps out there to get to the
checkers.”
JEREMY MAYFIELD, No. 36
360 OTC Toyota Camry, Bill
Davis Racing Finished: 31st
Can you talk about your race
today? “It was a long day
and we really focused on
testing the car all day. I
don’t know what we tested
all day, but we tested
something. We just kept
running all day and just
couldn’t get it where it
needed to be. This is a car
that we hadn’t run before
and it wouldn’t accept the
adjustments like we needed
it to during the race. But
we made the race this week
and finished the race, so I
know we will take some notes
back to the shop and
hopefully we gained some
information.”
DAVID REUTIMANN, No. 00
Burger King Toyota Camry,
Michael Waltrip Racing
Finished: 41st Can you talk
about your day and what
happened that took you out
of the race? “This was just
another disappointing day.
We battled the handling on
the car all day and just
never could seem to get it
where we needed to be. Then
we lost fuel pressure and
determined that the fuel
pump broke -- we had to come
to the garage to get that
replaced. We just can’t keep
having these types of
mechanical failures -- it’s
just frustrating. But I know
everyone will keep working
to get us where we need to
be and we have to gain owner
points and we can’t do that
when we are in the garage
early.”
DALE JARRETT, No. 44 UPS
Toyota Camry, Michael
Waltrip Racing Finished:
42nd How good was your car
and what happened that sent
you to the garage at the
halfway point in the race?
“We had a good car. I knew
if we ever got this race car
in a race we would be able
to show that it was fast. We
obviously had some trouble
getting it fast enough to
make a couple races, but I
knew by the feel of the car
and the down force that it
seemed to have, that it had
the potential to be a real
good car. It proved today
that it was a good car -- we
passed a lot of cars. We had
good pit stops and
unfortunately just past
halfway we had a fuel pump
problem. That ruined our
day, but we know what caused
it and we fixed that. It was
somewhat encouraging to go
out, run and pass some race
cars. We still have work to
do, but that was a definite
improvement.”
MICHAEL WALTRIP, No. 55
NAPA Toyota Camry, Michael
Waltrip Racing Finished:
38th
