Setzer Wins Wild
Kroger 250
Short track Dennis Setzer
dominated the last half of the Kroger
250 Craftsman Truck Series for another
win at the half mile paper clip. It was
his third win at the track and
eighteenth of his career. It has been
three years since Bobby Hamilton Racing
has been to victory lane and first since
he his death. Setzer was very emotional
in victory lane. Coming to the
checkered flag out of turn 3 Kyle Busch
ran into Benson wrecking both of them
and costing them both top 3 finishes.
Matt Crafton got his first second place
finish ever. Third place Rick Crawford
finished in third, Kenny Schrader fourth
and Erik Darnell rounded out the top 5.
It was a cold, early spring day at the
Martinsville Speedway as the NASCAR
Craftsman Truck Series took the green
flag with Jack Sprague at the point.
Sprague was followed by cup regular
Denny Hamlin and defending champion Ron
Hornaday. The race started out
relatively clean and light on cautions
as Sprague and his Kevin Harvick Inc.
teammate took charge of the race.
After the second caution of the day
Brendan Gaughan pitted for adjustments,
tires and fuel on about lap 55. Denny
Hamlin took charge after the restart
leading Sprague and Hornaday for quite a
while until no. 9 truck of Justin Marks
went around bringing out the caution.
After the restart defending series
champion Todd Bodine and Colin Braun
exchanged blows during the course of
getting around the track. No one was
wrecked but both made some great saves.
The green flag conditions did not last
too long as Andy Lally get wrecked hard
after getting hit by Ted Musgrave on lap
72 bringing out the 4th
caution. Pit stops for Jack Sprague saw
problems as he missed his pit stall.
Chris Wallace, daughter of Nationwide
Series driver, Mike got the ‘lucky dog’
pass even though she collided with Ron
Hornaday who was forced to pit by NASCAR
to make repairs caused by the collision.
The restart on lap 91 saw Denny Hamlin
in the lead followed by Kyle Busch, Ken
Schrader, Donny Lia, and Chad McCumbee.
Leader and teammate Hamlin decided to
let points leader Kyle Busch lead a lap
after the restart. Then for about 3 laps
they battled for the lead until Busch
took the lead and took off. The 5th
caution flag flew as the no. 22 truck of
Phillip McGilton got into Phillip
McGilton sprinkling debris all over the
place. Hamlin pitted with Todd Bodine.
The restart saw Busch in the lead
followed by Dennis Stzer and Brendan
Gaughan. About lap 118 Busch got into
the back of the problematic no. 85 truck
of Brent Raymer causing him to lose the
lead. It also brought out the 6th
caution. This allowed Dennis Setzer to
inherit the lead. Busch made his pit
stop that put him back to the 23rd
position. Ron Hornaday pitted again and
did not repair the damage on his truck’s
radiator cover.
Setzer was still leading when Jon Wood
tried getting by Brent Raymer causing a
spin that also collected Jack Sprague
and many others. The yellow turned red
shortly thereafter as they tried
cleaning up mess on the track.
Setzer was in control when Hamlin got
punted by Erik Darnell after slowing
when he thought he a flat tire after the
restart. Shortly after that it appeared
that Gaughan’s fuel strategy was going
to work when Phillip McGilton caused
leader Setzer to lose the spot . But
Setzer was able to get passed him pretty
easily after a couple of more cautions.
Restart with 15 left saw Setzer ,
Benson , Mike Skinner and Kyle Busch
leading until the 14th
caution came out when the no. 2 truck of
Jack Sprague got spun around and was
nailed by Shelby Howard just 2 laps
later. This caused the second red flag
to come out while they cleaned up the
track. However, no one could catch
Setzer on the restart with 8 to go as
Busch and Skinner battled for third.
Unfortunately Skinner ran out of fuel
causing Busch to tag the back of that
truck causing the final yellow flag to
bring a green, white checkered flag
finish.
