Just last week I wrote about how Crown Royal named the Sprint Cup race at the  Richmond International Raceway after the winner of a contest. The race was called “Crown Royal Presents, the Dan Lowry 400”. I had the opportunity to speak to Lowry prior to the race weekend, during the race weekend and last Friday afternoon.

Lowry had no idea what to expect with this experience and neither did I. What I thought would happen did, Lowry became a bigger fan. “I never thought I could be a bigger fan,” Lowry explained from his Ohio home last Friday. “But the experience put everything in a new perspective for me.”

A Friday – Saturday race weekend is very busy. The schedule is jammed packed with on track activity, media responsibilities and photo opportunities. Lowry said he was surprised with his schedule, “4 AM to 3 AM”. He said he was very excited while there. He said that everyone was just awesome. “I was expecting them to have me do what I need to do and that would be it,” he said. “But everyone just went above and beyond. It was unbelievable.”

One thing that Lowry had decided was that he wanted to purchase one of the Chevy Impala pace cars. He really did not think that it would be possible but Darrel Waltrip sort of pushed the subject and so did Claire B Lang from XM radio. Lowry said that he had financing arranged and a place to display the car. One of his friends owned a museum that he would display the car at. He did not think it was possible but all of the hoopla surrounding the car by the media got his sorts up. “It wasn’t a bad thing, not being able to purchase it,” he said about the attempted car purchase.  “I can’t think of a bad experience all weekend.”

One thing he wanted to do was thank all of the people that he dealt with all weekend. He said that Richmond International Raceway was absolutely awesome. “It wasn’t just me that they took care of. They took care of my parents, my friends and family. We really had no expectations. My friends bought tickets but somehow ended up in the pits. It was just great,” Lowry said.  But what came to a shock to me was when he thanked me and the other media. “You guys have been great.”

The surprising thing to him occurred during driver’s introductions. About a half a dozen drivers, including Jeff Gordon and Tony Stewart took the time to congratulate him. “It meant a lot to me,” he said. “I also felt it was just a spur of the moment thing.”

I think that Crown Royal made a big race fan an even bigger one. But one also finds out that it wasn’t just the sponsor, it was the track, their staff, the media and everyone else involved that made it a worthwhile experience for the Lowry family. They were a great bunch and they looked like they had fun. It was an absolute pleasure for me to work with them and I hope that I can run into them in the garage area some time soon. I would also like for Dan Lowry to know that he has a standing offer to work for this website any time he wants!
