Thoughts on the 2008 Sprint All-Star Race

The 2008 edition of the Sprint All-Star Race was at once interesting and entertaining, but I have several questions that need to be answered and comments that have to be made.

Kyle Busch and Denny Hamlin both mentioned that they were running experimental engines for this race. It was the downfall of both racers. Has this race become nothing more than a R&D race for the competitors? Whatever happened to the participants gong all-out for the win? I guess a million dollars doesn't mean as much as practicing for the Coca-Cola 600. That's sad. Do major league baseball players use their All-Star game to use experimental bats and balls? I don't like it.

It was a good idea to have a qualifying race to let a couple of drivers into the big race, but it makes no sense to have established stars go through this. Elliott Sadler should have been in the race and A.J. Almeneinger (affectionately called "the dinger,) should not have been. If a top-35 driver is not an All-Star, then certainly the likes of "the dinger" should not be. Which brings me back to the idea of a fan vote, but I've worn that idea out.

Kasey Kahne is another who should have been in the race without going through a back door. And the fact that he won is even more satisfying, but in other years we've seen lesser individuals get the honor. Still, let the fans vote (sorry, but I can't get off this subject).

Dale Jarrett was running his last race. One of the biggest blunders of the last few years has been Jarrett's move to Michael Waltrip Racing and Toyota two years ago. Sure, Jarrett wasn't a world beater with Robert Yates Racing over the last few years, but he didn't have to suffer the embarrassment of not qualifying for races and running way back in the field. Looking at the way he ended his career, DJ did not deserve this. Never was there a better example for the sport. I wish him well in the broadcast booth.

The broadcast was first rate for the most part, but I wish the rooting for certain drivers would stop. It isn't intentional with any of the best crew covering racing (I shudder at the thought of the coming ESPN train wreck), but it gets old real fast. Report the facts and be professional, guys.

I am at once confused and appalled with the non-performance of Jeff Gordon this year. Many want to make excuses for him, but something isn't working over at the No.24. The same could be said for many teams, but it is especially shocking when it comes to that car. How long will it take for changes to be made? Stay tuned.

Finally, the crew at Lowe's Motor Speedway have to be congratulated for putting on a great show. There was something for everyone and that's what's important. We'll do it again in 364 days.
