Maybe it was the fact
that I was watching the action from a
sharp angle with a large group of
people. Maybe it was that some of my
favorite drivers were bounced out early.
Maybe it was just a bloody boring race.
Dover could not be over fast enough for
me. I mean, it was BAD enough that my
brother, the host, was dozing of and his
guy was running near the front.
Kyle Busch is the
most entertaining driver
in NASCAR today. I enjoy
it when he wins, as he
did on Sunday for the
fourth time this season.
I enjoy it when things
go BAD for him, which
has not happened much
this season. In fact, he
has ran every lap in
2008 except for a couple
in Bristol (where he
finished 17th) and he
finished 38th at
Martinsville after
missing 57 laps there.
Of the nine races he did
not win, he was in the
Top Five in five and no
worse than 11th in 11.
Notice the nice symmetry
there? I don't even have
to mention those four
Nationwide wins and two
Craftsman truck
victories. Maybe it is
all about him. Sprint
Cup, by butt. This has
become the new Busch
series.
Dover consisted of
400 laps, but the UGLY
highlight took place
just 16 in. Elliott
Sadler cut down to the
inside only to discover
David Gilliland there.
BAD move. Sadler's Dodge
got bounced to the wall,
then came to rest right
in front of the field to
become the Best Buy
pinata. Tony Stewart
smoked the sucker first,
then Denny Hamlin flew
in to the wreckage as
though brakes were
optional on his beast.
Scott Riggs managed to
get himself a piece of
Sadler before Bill
Elliott clipped him on
the way by. Dale
Earnhardt Jr and Kevin
Harvick missed Sadler,
but got caught up just
the same. Soon, fans
were moving to their
backup drivers.
Only six cars were
left on the lead lap
when they wrapped things
up. Jeff Burton, who
finished a lap down in
8th, was not among them.
Then again, he is GOOD
enough to remain the
only driver who has ran
every lap, but one.
Busch and Burton
continue to lead the
points parade, with
Junior next. Carl
Edwards and Matt Kenseth,
who finished second and
third at Dover, round
out the top five. The
Hendrick duo of Jeff
Gordon and Jimmie
Johnson, along with
Clint Bowyer and Denny
Hamlin, remain solidly
in the Chase.
Then things get
interesting. Harvick,
Stewart, and Kasey Kahne
are in the Chase, but by
less than a hundred
points. The GOOD news
for David Ragan, Ryan
Newman, Martin Truex Jr,
and Matt Kenseth is that
they are within a
hundred of getting in.
Maybe this is why we
watch week after week.
Okay, maybe my
condemnation of last
week's event was unfair.
Maybe it wasn't boring.
Maybe I'm the tooth
fairy. I did a little
research to figure out
what others thought was
the most boring track.
The top two answers were
Pocono and Michigan.
Bloody great! Guess what
the next two events are
on the calender. That
can't be GOOD.
You might have
noticed that I've
shortened this up just a
bit this week. Maybe
GOOD news for you, but
in an hour I'm going to
jump on a bus (I rarely
take the bus, so Lord
knows where I'll wind
up) to visit a dentist
to have a gold-capped
tooth removed. No, it
did not come that way
naturally. Tomorrow,
just for fun, I'm going
to get a filling in the
tooth directly above the
newly formed void.
Getting teeth fixed or
pulled. It is like
reliving that Dover race
all over again.
The boys are in
Pocono on Sunday. Enjoy
the race!
