Joey Logano took the
lead from team mate Kyle
Busch on lap 147 and
never really looked back
on his way to his first
victory in the NASCAR
Nationwide series. Two
months ago the driver
was ineligible to drive
in the series because he
was under 18 years of
age. He has only raced
in three events winning
2 poles, including the
one for this race.
His
crew chief, Dave Rogers
said, "Three starts, two
poles, one win. He's
OK.” His father, Tom
Logano watched the race
form the pits and
explained that he
thought it would take
longer for his son to
find victory lane in the
series. It also made for
a perfect fathers day
gift. "I was wondering
what I was going to get
for my dad," the younger
Logano said. "This
should work for sure."
The win made him the
youngest driver to ever
win in the series
eclipsing the record set
by Casey Atwood in 1999.
“The team did amazing,"
Logano said. "I didn't
think we had the car
today. We unloaded in
practice and I said,
'Shoot, we might have a
top-five out of this
deal today.' We got it
going, got it going. Got
the pole. Then we were
too tight, Kyle got by
us. Then we freed it up,
got back by Kyle. He got
loose or something and
hit the fence. I'll tell
you what, how about this
team? Freaking amazing,”
Logano yelled with
youthful enthusiasm that
was quite evident from
his burn out celebrating
the win. The tires were
shredded.
The
race was dominated by
the Joe Gibbs Racing duo
of Logano and cup series
leader Kyle Busch. Busch
started from the rear of
the field because he
missed qualifying.
Within 50 laps he was in
the lead. The two raced
in line until lap 163
when Busch, running in
second and appearing to
be catching Logano lost
the car and backed it
into the wall. Scott
Wimmer came in second,
Mike Wallace third, last
week’s winner Brad
Keselowski fourth, and
Bryan Clauson was fifth.
"I
expected to win here, I
expected to win in
Dover," said Logano, the
Joe Gibbs Racing driver
nicknamed "Sliced
Bread," as in the best
thing since. "I have to
win. (Losing) is not an
option."
