Those
famous words, created by
Eddie Gossage of Texas
Motor Speedway, took a
different turn this
weekend at Michigan
International Speedway.
A top secret meeting
between the NASCAR
Sprint Cup drivers and
NASCAR took place on
Friday. NO media was
allowed to attend the
meeting, so no one
really knows what was
said and all we have is
some drivers that told
the public that it was
about criticism of the
so-called "Car of
Tomorrow" and the
negative comments that
have been uttered by
some of the Sprint Cup's
finest. I wonder.
Not that I doubt the
word of the drivers, but
this is just too
strange. I'd like a show
of hands. How many times
have the NFL or MLB had
a meeting to tell the
layers to not criticize
the officials? Never.
Weren't we going to stop
the petty and stringent
rules on driver
behavior? Isn't it a
little silly to blame
all the criticism for
crowds at races being
down in the day of $4.00
unleaded gasoline and
rocketing ticket and
motel prices? It speaks
volumes when Tony
Stewart, when asked how
his car was after
Sunday's LifeLock 400,
says (paraphrasing here)
that his car was awesome
and he didn't know how
good he had it until the
meeting on Friday?
I didn't make the
trip to Michigan this
weekend. It was too far
and the budget didn't
allow for nearly a grand
in gas costs, but on
television, there seemed
to be a lot of empty
seats. so many, in fact,
that it was alarming. I
doubt hat had anything
to do with the criticism
of the COT or anything
else but economics. Of
course there others that
say the meeting had
noting to do with the
COT.
Listening to the
drivers sidestep the
lawsuit issue between
NASCAR and former
official Maurcia Grant,
was almost humorous.
Everyone of them focused
on the COT, but when
asked about the lawsuit,
they gave one unified
answer. Each driver
really didn't know
enough about the lawsuit
to comment. That throws
up a red flag to me. Of
course, that's the smart
answer, because none of
us do know the true
details. No matter. Not
one member of the press
was there to tell us
what really happened, so
we'll just have to
wonder. My guess is that
this is the first of
many meetings that will
be secret. That lawsuit
is going to really be a
really rough ride. Of
course, it wasn't
mentioned at the
meeting. Right?
