Ron Hornaday Jr. is
known as the ‘master of
restarts’ and Erik
Darnell could not muster
a challenge even when a
late yellow flag caused
the race to finish in
overtime. Hornaday led
the last 129 ( of the
139 total laps he led)
laps on his way to his
record 36th
Craftsman Truck Series
victory at the Memphis
Motorsports Park
Saturday. Darnell
finished second , Matt
Crafton, who is now
second in the points
came in third, Rick
Crawford fourth and
David Starr rounded out
the top 5.
Hornaday made it pretty
clear in victory lane
that he wanted the
unique Elvis Presley
trophy presented to the
winner of the race. "I
really wanted that
trophy,” Hornaday said,
"That Elvis Trophy is
the coolest in the
world.”
Hornaday started third
on the grid and
challenged pole sitter
Johnny Benson for the
lead shortly after an
early restart after the
yellow flew for a
spinning Todd Bodine.
Teammate Jack Spraugue
was in third when a
debris caution closed
the field up at lap 35.
Hornaday got to Benson
on lap 44 and bumped him
slightly when he
apparently got loose.
When Bodine experienced
his second spin of the
night the leaders pitted
while others stayed out.
Hornaday restarted in
sixth on lap 58. On lap
83 with Benson in the
lead and Hornaday
second, the track again
went green and Benson
had apparent issues on
the restart so Hornaday
assumed the lead for
good.
