For
the umpteenth time this
season, Tony Stewart has
lead the most laps and
looked as if he would
finally bring the #20
Home Depot Toyota to
victory lane. Instead a
two-tire pit-stop cost
Stewart the win.
The rain arrived
minutes later and Kurt
Busch won with Michael
Waltrip in second and
J.J. Yeley in third.
TNT's Ralph Shaheen
interviewed Stewart
while sitting in his car
during the rain delay
and the look on
Stewart's face and the
sound of his voice told
the entire story. He
didn't show anger and he
never became sarcastic
with Shaheen.
The snake that has
haunted him throughout
the entire season had
taken a bite again and
had defeated him.
Stewart's bad luck
began with his third
place run in the Daytona
500, the race that is
beginning to allude him
much like it did Dale
Earnhardt. Leading on
the last lap, Penske
teammates Ryan Newman
and Busch drafted passed
Stewart for a one-two
finish.
The bad luck
continued at races like
Bristol, where he lead
the most laps but ended
up a disappointing 14th
after an accident with
Kevin Harvick.
In Talladega, Stewart
led the most laps again
but a late race accident
involving Martin Truex,
Jr., Kurt Busch, Jamie
McMurray, Bobby Labonte
and Dale Earnhardt, Jr.
collected him. Stewart
finished 38th.
Darlington brought
another accident, this
time with Elliott
Sadler, leaving Stewart
to rally back to a 21st
place finish.
Stewart had the
Coca-Cola 600 all but in
the bag until a tire
blew with less than four
laps to go. Stewart
pitted and Kasey Kahne
took home his first
points paying race in
over a year.
In Dover, Stewart
never got a chance to
lead any laps, being
collected by Sadler on
lap 19. Stewart finished
a devastating 41st,
dropping to 11th in the
Spring Cup Series
points.
After a disappointing
race in Pocono and
dropping to 12th in
points, Stewart rallied
back in Michigan with a
Top 5 and moving back to
11th in points.
Sonoma was sure to be
a bright spot for
Stewart, who has always
done well at road
courses. Just as the
race was winding down
and he was about to take
the lead away from
teammate Kyle Busch,
Stewart was collected in
a three car spin
involving Jamie McMurray
in third and Kevin
Harvick in fourth.
Stewart finished
Sonoma with a top 10
finish. He was
disappointed and upset
after the race and
annoyed by TNT pit
reporter Marty Snider
after he was asked the
same question twice.
This weekend, Stewart
wasn't in the sarcastic
mood after the race. He
looked dumbfounded as he
exited his car slowly
after finishing
thirteenth in New
Hampshire.
"It's just been the
oddest year I've ever
seen for this race
team," he told reporters
after exiting his car.
The odd year and bad
luck isn't helping with
what's really on
Stewart's mind – his
future.
Stewart has a year
left on his contract
with Joe Gibbs Racing
but rumors are
circulating that he may
jump ship to Haas CNC,
obtaining part
ownership. He also has
shown interest in the #5
Hendricks car that will
be vacated by Casey
Mears.
While Stewart hasn't
come out and said that
he would not be
returning to Joe Gibbs
Racing, anybody who
knows a little about the
man behind the #20 car
could tell by the look
in his eyes while
sitting in the car,
talking to Shaheen –
he's already gone.
