Missouri
native Carl Edwards took
the lead with less than
50 laps to go in the
Missouri-Illinois Dodge
Dealers 250 on Saturday
night at the Gateway
International Speedway.
He never looked back as
he cruised to victory
over Joe Gibbs Racing
rookie sensation Joey
Lagano. Edwards is the
fourth two time winner
of the Nationwide Series
race at Gateway having
won the race in 2006. He
joins Dale Earnhardt
Jr., Reed Sorenson and
Kevin Harvick with that
special distinction.
Edwards grew up just a
few hours from the
suburban St. Louis track
and the win was special
to him. "This is
unbelievable to win
here. The support of
these fans is just
amazing," Edwards said
after the race. "Winning
here and at Kansas
Speedway are the ones
that mean the most to
me."
The
win by Edwards, his
second of this season,
put the end to the
Toyota and Joe Gibbs
Racing dominance over
the series. But Logano
was in second and led
laps during the race but
Edwards was too strong
and overtook him early
in the race. “We had a
pretty good night,”
Logano explained after
the race in the media
center. “We made a lot
of adjustments during
the race and we could go
from one end to the
other. We could turn the
center good but had no
forward bite or be too
tight in the center and
have good forward bite.
We couldn’t really get
it right where we wanted
to. It seemed like Carl
Edwards got it right
where he wanted to. That
thing was really stout..
We gained a lot of spots
in the pits, but I lost
a lot of spots in the
pits with me driving. I
learned a little bit
there. We’ll just have
to go to the next track
and work on it there."
Edwards took 4 tires and
a full tank of gas and
easily got by leader
Jason Leffler. Edwards
also led the most laps
in a race that never
seemed to get going
well. With 84 laps
remaining rookie Landon
Cassill got into Scott
Wimmer who hit the wall
very hard. Mike Bliss
was also involved in the
incident.
David Reutimann was
strong early, leading
twice for over 30 laps,
but was involved in an
incident with Brad
Keselowski on Lap 142,
getting Reutimann to a
25th-place finish.
“We were just fortunate
that David Reutimann
wasn’t in the race at
the end,” race winner
Edwards said. “He was
really fast; I thought
he had the car to beat.”
