Johnny Benson took charge of the Ford Tough 225 NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series race at the Kentucky Speedway Saturday evening winning easily over Bill Davis racing team mate Michael Annett. It was Benson’s second win in 2008 and Annett’s third race ever in the series. Matt Crafton, Dennis Setzer and David Starr rounded out the top 5. NASCAR Sprint Cup points leader Kyle Busch failed to crack the top 5 by a hair. He finished sixth after leading the race earlier in the night.

The race started out slow with Busch jumping out from his second place starting position. But more than a third of the first 25 laps were run under caution, two of the first three cautions were due to spins and the last of them, on lap 22 was due to a blown engine on the JC Stout operated truck. Benson took the opportunity to pit, from his third place running position. Pit strategy began to take hold as about one third of the trucks running stayed out. Busch gave up the lead about lap 50 to pit under green, surrendering the lead to Mike Skinner.  Unfortunately it was only a few laps later when Chrissie Wallace wrecked bringing out a caution causing Busch to be a lap down.

Benson won the race off pit road that time followed by Erik Darnell, Skinner, Marks and Todd Bodine. The race was then red flagged so that safety crews could repair the wall that Wallace hit. There were a few teams that had some loose lug nits after the pit stops causing them to pit under green. It included points leader Ron Hornaday and Todd Bodine causing them to go a lap down. All the while Kyle Busch was charging to the front. Benson continued to lead until pit stops under yellow for debris took place. Annett led the trucks off pit road as he and Setzer only took 2 tires. Benson came out third but he had four fresh Goodyear tires on his truck.

The restart saw Benson jump out to the lead as Marks and Darnell got caught up in a wreck with Chad McCumbee bringing out another caution. After the clean up was complete the ensuing restart saw more carnage as Todd Bodine got into Jon Wood causing yet another caution.

The win put Benson in the points lead by one over Matt Crafton and by only five points over former leader Hornaday.
