It’s hard to believe that
this year is the 15th running of the
Allstate 400 at the Brickyard. It seems
like yesterday that Jeff Gordon won the
very first race at the famed Brickyard
and went on to become a big star in this
sport. So to celebrate the 15th
anniversary I came up with 15
interesting tidbits about NASCAR’s
yearly trip to Indy!
1.Dale Earnhardt (1995) is the only 400
winner to not kiss the bricks.
2.From 1998-2001 and again from
2005-2006 the winner of the 400 has gone
on to win the Cup Championship.
3.Rick Hendrick is the all time winning
car owner with five wins (4 with Jeff
Gordon and 1 with Jimmie Johnson).
4.Ray Evernham has two wins as a crew
chief (1994 and 1998) and one win as an
owner with Bill Elliot (2002).
5.Ricky Rudd (1997) is the only
driver/owner to win the 400.
6.The #10 Tide Car (1997) is the only
car from a single car team to win the
400.
7.Tony Stewart is the only Indiana born
and raised driver to win the 400.
8.GM Goodwrench has sponsored two
different winning drivers (Dale
Earnhardt in 1995 and Kevin Harvick in
2003).
9.Teammates have finished 1st and 2nd
only once (Dale Jarrett and Ernie Irvin
in 1996).
10.Jeff Gordon and Dale Jarrett have won
in two different car models (Gordon in a
Lumina and a Monte Carlo and Dale
Jarrett in a Thunderbird and a Taurus).
11.The very first green/white/checker
happened in the 2004 Allstate 400.
12.The 1995 race is the only Allstate
400 to be showed on tape-delay because
of a rain delay.
13.The ESPN/ABC broadcasting team is
made up of a former winner (Dale
Jarrett), two former winning crew chiefs
(Andy Petree and Ray Evernham), a former
winning car owner (Ray Evernham), and
the driver that has finished runner up
three times (Rusty Wallace).
14.Jeff Gordon (1998 and 2001) and Tony
Stewart (2005) are the only 400 winners
to win the following race at Watkins
Glen.
15.Johnny Benson is the only rookie
(1996) to lead the most laps in the 400.
