On a
weekend with rain
threatening the
festivities at Watkins
Glen International, the
drivers of the NASCAR
Sprint Cup Series appear
to be optimistic about
the potential for a
strong finish. After
last week's rain
dampened Nationwide Race
in Montreal, the chance
for rain tires on NASCAR
Stock Cars is a definite
possibility.
On the Sprint Cup
side, Driver of the #31
ATT, Jeff Burton is in
favor of giving rain
tires a try in the
series. "I don't
understand why the
Nationwide Series has
the opportunity to run
in the rain but we
don't. It is a definite
possibility but before
we go and put rain tires
on these cars, we must
have the opportunity, or
at least some way to
test and practice in the
rain." Commenting on the
challenge of passing
with the car of
tomorrow, Burton feels
that the emphasis should
be put on the driver
rather than the car.
"Its not any easier to
make the pass from 9th
to 10th than it is from
2nd to 1st. This series
has gotten so
competitive that its
difficult to pass no
matter where you are
running, everyone is on
an even plane."
With only 2 road
courses on the Nextel
Cup schedule, drivers
find the challenge of
going from an oval
course to a road course
to be extremely
frustrating. "I usually
start preparing for
Watkins Glen a month or
two in advance" Said
Dale Jr. With only 2 top
5's in 8 starts in the
Sprint Cup series,
Watkins Glen seems to be
Dale Jr's more likeable
road course, topping
California's Infineon
Raceway. "The Glen isn't
as technical as Infineon.
The passing at Watkins
Glen seems to take place
in the faster corners,
rather than the tighter,
slower corners at
Infineon."
Points leader Kyle
Busch could clinch the
top spot heading into
the 'Chase' with a win
on Sunday, but is only
concerned with running a
strong race. "You go out
there and run as hard as
you can in practice,
qualifying and the race,
and see what you've got.
Whether you win or run
out of gas and finish
36th, it doesn't matter
at this point. Second
through 36th don't
really matter, but a win
would be nice." Busch
had mixed emotions about
running on rain tires in
the Sprint Cup Series,
"From what I heard
everyone was all over
the place and not liking
that much. If we all
have to do it then we
all have to do it. It's
the same for everybody
so it's whoever sets up
the best for the wet or
for the dry or
whatever."
Denny Hamlin, Driver
of the #11 FedEx Toyota
, feels the same. "All I
saw up there was guys
going off the track and
not much passing. NASCAR
fans want to see side by
side racing, and the
only time passes were
made was when someone
went off the track. I
love road courses and I
want to give the fans
what they came here to
see, side by side
racing, and in the rain
I don't see how that
could happen."
One Sprint Cup driver
has the opportunity to
see the green flag fall
from a different
perspective than he has
ever seen. Jamie
McMurray, driver of the
#26 Crown Royal Ford
Fusion, has the
opportunity to drop the
green from the starter's
stand in tonight's Crown
Royal 200 for the Grand
Am Rolex Series, as the
honorary starter. Joking
in this press
conference, McMurray
stated "I have a deal
with Christian (Fittipaldi,
fellow Crown Royal
Driver), to hold off and
drop the green on lap 2
if he has a bad first
lap". Later he
commented, "I think it
will be awesome to feel
the power of the cars
below me, and finally
get a look from a
different perspective."
