There
are bragging rights in
the Irish Hills of
Michigan. And for the
next twelve months,
those rights belong to
the top-seeded Ford
wheeler Carl Edwards and
Roush Fenway Ford Racing
Team.
The dramatic trip to
the checkers on Sunday
gave Edwards his fifth
victory of the season,
behind the wheel of the
No. 99 Office Depot
Ford. He also earned
victory in the
Nationwide Series event,
becoming only the second
driver to sweep a race
weekend in 2008.
"The crew did an
unbelievable job, and
the greatest part is
that we didn't give up
more bonus points to
Kyle," Edwards said.
Kyle Busch leads the
season with eight
victories which
translate to 80 bonus
points when the Chase
for the Championship
begins in September. At
this point, Edwards has
40 bonus points, making
him second when the
Chase begins. Edwards
lost 10 points for a
rule infraction at Las
Vegas.
"He's just so
strong," Edwards began,
"every time I win, and
he finishes second,
that's really a twenty
point spread for us. We
just have to keep going
out there and try to win
the next three events
and go into the Chase on
even ground."
The accolades do not
stop there. Four years
ago, the young Edwards
debuted at Michigan as a
Sprint Cup driver. In
his short career, he has
accumulated his 12
career victories,
including one from the
June 2006 MIS race as
well. Edwards also has 6
wins in the Craftsman
Truck Series and a
Nationwide Series
Drivers Championship
Title. " It means a lot
to me," Edwards
commented on his day.
"Four years ago today, I
ran my first Cup race
for Jack Roush, and he
took a gamble on me.
Jack won the race that
day, I believe Greg
Biffle won it, and we
finished 10th," Edwards
continued. "All five of
the cars were in the top
ten. And to be part of
that again today for
Ford Motor Company, for
Roush and for all the
guys, it's an honor."
With his sweep of
Michigan International
Speedway, Edwards
becomes the first driver
since his former
teammate Mark Martin
(1993) completed the
weekend sweep. He also
celebrated his 29th
birthday at the track on
Friday.
"I can't believe my
good fortune," said Jack
Roush, Sprint Cup Team
Owner. "I've been in the
presence of really fast
company starting with
Mark Martin here in
1988. We didn't win
in'88," Roush continued,
"but we were in
contention from the very
beginning. Of course, he
put his mark on our
program and on our cars,
on our strategy and on
our thinking."
With his trademark
backflip, Edwards landed
a perfect finish for
Roush Racing. His
teammates also all
finished within the top
10, tying David Ragan's
career best finish of
third.
'From the get-go, we
had good speed," said
Ragan. "Our pit crew did
an amazing job." The
second generation Sprint
Cup driver is in his
second full season of
competition. He
continues to contend for
race wins, and is
excited with the
continued success at
Roush Racing. "It's good
to see all the Ford fans
and Jack Roush,
everybody's excited. I
don't know what it is
about this place, but we
all seem to run well
here," Ragan continued.
Carl Edwards Crew
Chief Bob Osborne
executed the perfect
strategy, getting the
No. 99 out in front of
the points leader Kyle
Busch. But, Edwards held
on to finish the race in
the top position. He
flawlessly delivered a
dramatic finish , by
rolling to a great
restart with only two
laps to go. "I had a lot
of fun," said Osborne,
"It was a challenge all
day." But, the trials
paid off as Edwards
delivered a flawless
performance in the
closing laps.
This is the 588th
race win for Ford in
Sprint Cup competition.
As a manufacture, they
lead in victories at the
MIS with 31 wins. Twelve
of Ford's Sprint Cup
wins at MIS belong to
car owner Jack Roush.
Roush also holds four
wins in Nationwide and
four wins in Craftsman
Truck competition on the
2 mile speedway.
