Line From Richmond |

What are
the story lines from
this week’s Chevy Rock n
Roll 400 NASCAR race
from Richmond Virginia?
Everybody wants to talk
about the Chase for the
Cup. Who’s going to be
the top twelve drivers
that will race their way
into a bid to be crowned
Nextel Cup Champion in
Homestead later this
year? I think the big
story is a newcomer to
the NASCAR Series named
Hanna. That’s right the
tropical storm that
raced it’s way up the
coast and into the
Richmond area Friday
evening postponing all
the story lines. Joey
Logano will now have to
wait to make his Cup
preview. It was quite
disappointing for fans
at the Richmond race
this weekend. They will
still have the
opportunity to see this
talented young man in
the Nationwide race but
not see him race against
42 of the best drivers
in the world. Logano
would have made the
race, shy of a major
disaster, (Hanna) as he
was fifth fastest in the
days only practice prior
to qualifying. Watching
the attention that he
gets as he walks through
the garage is amazing to
me. Most NASCAR fans
hadn’t heard of Logano
until just recently, but
they recognize him
before Cup Champion Bill
Elliot. As I was
standing in the garage
Friday morning watching
the drivers make their
way into the garage area
some fans didn’t even
recognize Bill Elliot.
They all however
recognized the young man
as new to the sport as
Hanna is.
Hanna may also affect
drivers such as Hamlin
and Bowyer as they are
planning to run in both
races now on the same
day. Will this add more
stress to these two
drivers as they try to
stay in the race for the
Chase? Will the long day
off prior to running the
race have any effect on
the nerves on the likes
of Gordon, Hamlin,
Bowyer, Ragan or Kahne?
What are they going to
do this windy rainy
Saturday? Some of the
drivers left as soon as
they called the
activities to get out of
it and maybe get it off
their minds. Some are
probably sitting in
their coaches playing
video games or watching
their favorite movies.
I’m certain they would
all rather be here
getting ready to race
their way into the
Chase.
So, I think that Hanna
is the big story line
and we will all have to
wait till Sunday
afternoon to know what
will be the next big
one.
