CONCORD,
NC – There had to be
concern among NASCAR
officials that the big
winner at Lowes Motor
Speedway on Friday night
would be Mother Nature.
Sprint Cup qualifying
and all practices were
cancelled due to weather
on Thursday , so race
officials had to be
pleased to see the sunny
skies that were
prevalent on Friday.
However, shortly after
the green flag was
dropped on the Dollar
General 300 Nationwide
race, Mother Nature
showed that she wasn’t
done just yet.
The
race saw two red flags
in the first 100 laps
due to rain, the second
for nearly an hour.
Drivers seemed pleased
with the track when they
were allowed to run,
although the theme of
the evening seemed to be
loose handling cars.
During the second red
flag, Jimmie Johnson was
asked what he would like
to see the crew change
on the next pit stop.
Johnson joked that he
would like to see about
7 rounds of bite and
maybe raise the track
bar an inch. Then
perhaps they would get
closer to a good
handling car.
Joey Logano started the
race strong, qualifying
fourth, and lead for 32
laps, but adjustments on
the car early caused
the rookie to get too
loose. The condition
finally got the best of
Logano on lap 94 when he
kissed the wall hard in
turn four. It wasn’t
just young drivers
finding the wall at
Lowe’s. Johnson, current
Sprint Cup points
leader, and defending
two time series champion
also got loose coming
out of turn two. He got
a chance to see just how
soft the soft wall is on
the inside of the back
straightaway crashing
into very hard. Johnson
was running eighth at
the time of his accident
and finished 33rd.
Justin Allgaier made his
Nationwide debut
tonight. You may be
asking yourself “who is
Justin Allgaier?” Don’t
worry you wouldn’t be
alone. However, if his
debut is any indication
of his future, then
Allgaier is going to be
a driver to keep an eye
on. A week ago, the 22
year old, was driving an
ARCA series car, before
being signed to a
Nationwide Series ride
by Roger Penske this
week. Allgair did
everything he could to
prove that Penske knows
talent. He qualified 14th
and was strong all night
running in the top ten
for most of the race
before being caught up
in Jeff Green’s
accident and seeing his
evening literally go up
in flames on the front
stretch with 75 laps to
go.
Perhaps Kyle Busch
should begin calling
himself the mailman.
Busch didn’t let rain,
loose handling, young
hungry drivers, nor a
falling stock market
keep him from delivering
yet another victory for
Joe Gibbs Racing taking
his ninth Nationwide
victory of the year
leading for a total of
137 laps of 200. This
backed up his spring win
at Lowes where he lead
86 of the 200 laps. It
should be noted that
between the Nationwide,
Sprint Cup and Craftsman
Truck series’, this was
Busch’s twentieth
victory for 2008 in
NASCAR series events.
Late caution flags
allowed fellow Cup
regulars, Jeff Burton,
Brian Vickers and
Nationwide points leader
Clint Bowyer to
challenge Busch, but
like we have seen so
many times this year and
as Carl Edwards said,
“no one had anything for
Kyle tonight.” Vickers
third place was a hard
fought finish. He
started the race 42nd
in a back-up car. Bowyer
finished fourth and now
has a 196 point lead
over fifth place
finisher Carl Edwards.
