Kyle Busch’s victory in
Saturday’s San Bernardino
200 at the Auto Club
Speedway of Southern
California is the 40th win
for Toyota in the NASCAR
Craftsman Truck Series (NCTS)
since the start of the 2004
season (102 races). Busch
led three times for a
race-high 51 laps for his
seventh-career NCTS win in
38 starts. Todd Bodine
(second), Johnny Benson
(third) and Terry Cook
(fourth) also scored
top-five finishes for
Toyota. Other Tundra drivers
in the field included Ted
Musgrave (sixth), Mike
Skinner (eighth), Phillip
McGilton (10th), David Starr
(13th) and Justin Marks
(33rd).
KYLE BUSCH, No. 51 San
Bernardino County Toyota
Tundra, Billy Ballew
Motorsports Finished: 1st
Can you talk about the
battle you had out there
with Todd Bodine? “Todd
Bodine got going pretty good
during one run, but this San
Bernardino Toyota Tundra was
awesome today. I’ve got to
thank all of these guys,
Richie Wauters (crew chief)
and everybody that works
back at the shop. We had to
do our switch over the
winter and it was pretty
tough, but the guys made it.
They gave me some awesome
trucks. We had a great one
in Daytona and another great
one here today. I can’t wait
to get to Atlanta. Here is
the start to hopefully a
three-peat this weekend.” As
you took the checkered flag
you said three things over
the radio. You said ‘awesome
truck, thank you guys, this
is so much fun.’ Is that how
you feel about racing this
truck? “It is how I feel
racing in general. The
NASCAR Craftsman Truck
Series is a great stepping
ground and a great stepping
stone for everybody to go
through. It is just so fun
to run with these guys. Todd
Bodine, Mike Skinner and Ron
Hornaday Jr. -- they are all
of the heroes of this
series. This win here
probably means the absolute
most, because here in
November 2001 I got kicked
out of this race track and I
wasn’t able to run in the
NASCAR Craftsman Truck
Series. I probably could
have sat on the pole and won
the race that weekend, too,
so this is pretty
bittersweet here.” How was
your truck handling at the
end of the race, and what
were you telling your crew?
“I was telling them that
when I slow down, I get
looser, so I needed to keep
going. I almost wrecked
there a couple of times.
That’s just how loose you
need to run these things in
this series. We got it a
little bit tight there at
the end and we had to back
it down a little bit. It’s
pretty cool to leave here
today with the points lead.
I know we can’t carry that
throughout the year because
we aren’t running all the
races, but we wish we
could.”
TODD BODINE, No. 30
Lumber Liquidators Toyota
Tundra, Germain Racing
Finished: 2nd Did the
weather at the end of the
race change the way your
truck handled? “Yeah, that
was just it. When we were
leading there before the
last pit stop we were really
good. It started getting
tight and I told Mike
(Hillman Sr., crew chief).
Kyle (Busch) got a lot
better grip and he was a
little free so that helped
him out and made us a little
worse. After we changed the
tires we put some scuffs on
and adjusted it to make it a
little freer, but the scuffs
made it too free. Right at
the end there I could
actually run times faster
than Kyle but every once in
a while, I would slip and he
would pull back away. It was
a great race for the Lumber
Liquidators Tundra. First
last week and second this
week, that is how you win
championships. It looks like
it’s going to come down to
this front five here to win
the championship.” Are you
pleased with the impressive
statement you and your team
has made to start this year?
“Yeah. We all put our heads
together and figured out
where we missed it last
year. We tried to figure out
what things we could improve
on this year. We had Mike
Hillman Sr. on top of the
box this week -- we missed
Mike Hillman Jr. -- but we
had a great day. The Lumber
Liquidators crew did a great
job. We just went to work.
We tried to figure out what
we were missing last year.
We have got a pretty good
handle on it. I’m not going
to say it’s perfect, but
we’ve got a good handle on
it. The truck was pretty
good. The Tundra ran great
and it was a good day”
JOHNNY BENSON, No. 23
Toyota Certified Used
Vehicles Tundra, Bill Davis
Racing Finished: 3rd How
were you able to get your
Tundra to the front of the
pack today? “To tell you the
truth, we didn’t do a whole
lot. We did a little bit of
air pressure and everything
was so tight from where we
started we couldn’t afford
to take too much time on pit
road making adjustments. The
guys did a heck of a job on
the Toyota Certified Used
Vehicles Tundra. It was a
great day for us to start at
the back and I thought we
might have had something for
them when we got up there.
Todd (Bodine) was getting me
pretty loose and then I was
just hanging on for a little
while. We got just two tires
there at the end and
probably picked up a spot
doing that. It was a good
day for us.” Do you prefer
running this race during the
day or night? “The night
racing here is definitely
different than the day.
Although, today was similar
to a night race with the
clouds and it was cold. I
don’t think it was a huge
swing of difference, but it
is typically different. I
think with this week how the
weather was it wasn’t a huge
difference.”
TERRY COOK, No. 60 Wyler
Racing Toyota Tundra, Wyler
Racing Finished: 4th How
happy are you coming home
with a fourth-place finish?
“It was a lot of fun. I
think this was a career best
for me here at Fontana. I
think my best before today
was sixth and that’s pretty
sad because I’ve been in
every one of them. When you
finally get in this great
equipment that the team put
underneath me today – we
knew we were pretty good
since we unloaded. We were
just a little bit off in the
short run when the field got
away from us and it was hard
to pass. Once the field got
spread out again, I could
pick and choose and work the
outside line like I needed
to. Then, we could march our
way back through the field
and we were turning some of
the fastest lap times of the
race. I’m proud of our guys
– great pit stops and a well
prepared truck.” Did
yesterday’s rain affect the
track conditions of today’s
race? “The track was about
the same as it was Thursday
(during practice). I truly
enjoy racing here during the
daytime because it’s very
predictable. When we
practice during the day and
race during the day it’s
typical. When we practice
during the day and race at
night it’s a crap shoot with
what the track’s going to
do. It was very predictable
today. The track had a fair
amount of grip for
California Speedway. When
you’re trying to run these
things wide- open with this
restrictor plate program
that we’re running in the
NASCAR Craftsman Truck
Series and you figure you
can run wide-open – you
start looking around for
spots to pick up. It’s fun.”
MIKE SKINNER, No. 5
Toyota Tundra, Bill Davis
Racing Finished: 8th What
happened at the beginning of
the race? “We got a heck of
a start and the truck was
really good -- we could run
wide open in turns one and
two. When I dove off into
turn three, the truck lost a
cylinder. It just went
downhill from there. Then,
apparently a piece of debris
hit the nose and the piece
was flopping up on the
straight-away and killing
the thing so the motor never
ran right the rest of the
day. The team was able to
fix the plug wire so there
wasn't anything wrong with
the motor, it was an aero
thing, but we didn't see
that to be able to know
that. But the motor was fine
and then whatever we hit
just killed it.” How was the
truck after you got the
problem corrected? “We got
back up in the top-five, but
we started out with the
right-front tire too low.
Jeff (Hensley, crew chief)
and I learned a lot about
this tire today. The last
time we took four tires, he
was only going to take two,
but I flat-spotted the tires
coming in so I screamed for
them to get four tires. The
team was heads-up and did a
great job, we had a good pit
stop. It cost us because if
I hadn't of slid the tires
coming in then I probably
could have finished a little
higher. I bought him a
little time getting in, but
I got in hot and slid the
tires. But I knew if we went
back out with the tires like
that then we would end up
having to come back in and
then we would have ended up
25th. The team did a
heads-up job and Jeff did a
heads-up job. We took a
(crappy) day and turned it
into a top-10 and that's
what we have to do every
week.”
MIKE SKINNER, cont’d How
was the new truck package
today? “We have to work on
the package some, but I
really praise NASCAR for
making the changes to the
trucks and trying to make it
better. At the end of the
day, they'll make whatever
adjustments they need to and
they'll make sure that this
Craftsman Truck Series
continues to be the most
exciting racing and it
really, truly is. If they
get a little bored, then I'm
sure they'll fix it and they
won’t be bored for long. My
hat’s off to them.”
