Wrong Place, Wrong Time
for Harvick, Shell-Pennzoil
Chevy at Dover
Race/Date: Best Buy 400 -
June 1, 2008
Location: Dover (Del.)
International Speedway
Start Position: 34th
Finish Position: 38th
Points Position: 10th
(lost three positions)
Kevin Harvick was a
victim of circumstance on
lap 17 of the Best Buy 400
at Dover International
Speedway as the No. 29
Shell-Pennzoil Chevrolet
Impala SS was caught up in
another driver’s wreck after
demonstrating the potential
for a good run.
The Bakersfield, Calif.,
native lapped the one-mile
concrete oval in 23.884
seconds (150.981 mph) during
Friday afternoon’s
qualifying session to line
up the No. 29 Shell-Pennzoil
Chevy 34th for Sunday’s main
event.
The 2007 Daytona 500
winner wasted little time
making a push toward the
front following the drop of
the green flag, moving into
30th on lap 11and up to the
28th position on lap 16.
Unfortunately, on lap 17
an 11-car melee began when
Elliott Sadler spun right in
front of a pack of cars
coming into turn two.
“Happy” Harvick tried to
avoid the incident but was
tagged from behind and then
was hit several more times,
leaving the No. 29 Chevy
with significant damage.
Harvick brought the
injured yellow and red
machine to the garage from
repairs as crew chief Todd
Berrier guided his crew in
completing the work
necessary to return the car
to the track. After spending
more than 50 laps in the
garage, Harvick went back on
the speedway and logged laps
for the remainder of the day
to earn as many valuable
points as possible.
In the end, Harvick and
company were left with a
38th-place finish and fell
three spots, to 10th, in the
NASCAR Sprint Cup Series
championship point
standings. At the same time,
the hard work by the
Shell-Pennzoil crew to get
the 11-time Sprint Cup
winner back out on the track
extended his streak of races
without a DNF (did not
finish) to 57 consecutive
races, just two races shy of
breaking his own record of
58.
Kyle Busch captured his
fourth victory of the season
and beat second-place
finisher Carl Edwards by a
margin of four seconds. Greg
Biffle, Matt Kenseth and
Jeff Gordon rounded out the
top-five finishers.
Harvick’s Richard
Childress Racing teammate
Jeff Burton brought home an
eighth-place finish. Clint
Bowyer, Harvick’s other RCR
teammate, wasn’t as lucky.
He crossed the finish line
36th after suffering from a
broken shock mount on lap
213.
Next up for Harvick and
the Shell-Pennzoil team is
the Pocono 500 at Pocono
Raceway. Live coverage of
the event will be televised
on TNT Sunday, June 8
beginning at 12:30 p.m.
Eastern Daylight Time. The
race will also broadcast
live on the Motor Racing
Network and Sirius Satellite
Radio. Qualifying for the
14th points-paying race on
the 2008 NASCAR Cup Series
schedule will be telecast
live on SPEED June 6 at 3:30
p.m. EDT. MRN and Sirius
Satellite Radio will provide
qualifying updates
KEVIN HARVICK - NO. 29
SHELL-PENNZOIL CHEVROLET
IMPALA SS –
“We were a victim of
circumstance in that wreck.
My spotter (Billy O’dea) had
me slowed down and I just
got hit from behind. The
Shell-Pennzoil Chevrolet was
really good during the first
16 laps. The No. 29 crew did
a great job to get be back
out on the race track and
the points we were able to
gain might come into play
when it comes Chase time.”
