#20 Tony Stewart and car
owner Joe Gibbs joined the
guys on set to discuss
Stewart’s recent
announcement that he will be
a driver/owner next season
Gibbs on Stewart saying
he wants to be like him:
“You do not want to be like
Joe. JD (Gibbs) said it
best; in a year we are going
to say ‘what do you think
about this guy (Stewart)?
He’s a pain in the rear.’”
Gibbs on the importance
of people in winning in
football or NASCAR: “You
don’t win with trick plays
in football, you don’t win
with hoped up cars (in
NASCAR), you win with
people.”
Gibbs on an “agreement”
he has with Stewart: “I do
want to announce while we
are here that we have
reached an agreement with
Tony on one thing; next year
when he sees our cars coming
he has agreed to pull over.”
NASCAR legend Richard
Petty, celebrating his 50th
year in the sport this week,
joined the guys on set.
McReynolds on Richard
Petty’s legendary
relationship with the fans:
“You have been a role model
for athletes, not just
NASCAR drivers, but athletes
on how to treat fans.”
Kyle Petty on the impact
of the 150 point driver and
owner penalties on #1 Martin
Truex Jr.’s team and its
impact on them making the
Chase: “It knocks the wind
out of their sails. Here’s a
team knocking on the door to
get into the Chase and all
of a sudden – BAM – your 150
points back, your crew chief
and everybody are going
home…talk about momentum, it
knocks it the other way.”
This week’s installment
of Pride of NASCAR featured
Hall of Famer and Daytona
500 winner Buddy Baker
Baker on his father,
two-time NASCAR National
Champion Buck Baker, using
him as a decoy while
bootlegging when he was a
child: “I had a little
sailor suit. They’d put me
in the back on top of the
booze and he’d say ‘Wave,
boy.’ Police would drive up,
I’d wave at them with that
little sailor hat on, they’d
wave back and he’d turn and
say ‘Good job, now sit
down.’”
NASCAR Sprint Cup Series
points leader Kyle Busch
joined the guys on set
Busch on his pursuit of a
Sprint Cup championship
while still running in the
Nationwide and Craftsman
Truck Series: “The focus
needs to be on the Cup side
and everything there. We’re
going to run some races and
people are going to think
I’m crazy and that I need a
week off, but I’m going to
run the Craftsman Truck
Series next weekend in
Kentucky. I’m sure all the
truck competitors are now
loving me for that one, but
we’re going to have some
fun.”
Allstate Countdown to
Green
Hosted by Bill Weber,
with Wally Dallenbach
Truex Jr. interviewed by
pit reporter Marty Snider,
on the feasibility of him
still making the Chase: It’s
not impossible. We can do
it, but we have to have
eight great races. There
can’t be any problems, there
can’t be any DNFs, we can’t
be bad in any of them. We
have to be good every week.”

Petty on Kyle Busch
leading another race: “Kyle
Busch has to be the
loneliest NASCAR driver out
here. He’s led so many laps
he never sees anybody in
front of him for two-thirds
of the race, he just runs on
the same racetrack…he’s the
Maytag guy.”
Petty on his father
Richard Petty not taking
advantage of having NASCAR
President Mike Helton in his
car as part of NASCAR’s
pre-race festivities: “How
cool was it to see Richard
Petty driving (NASCAR
President) Mike Helton
around the racetrack this
morning? Ask him something,
get us a favor while you’ve
got him out there.”
Petty on a beauty shot of
Chicagoland Speedway’s new
lights with the sunset in
the background: “This is
more like Larry Mac
(McReynolds) stuff, he’s the
guy who used to tape the
Weather Channel.”
Weber following a “magic
trick” in which Larry
McReynolds cut pre-race host
Marc Fein in half: “Now he
can work two assignments on
the same weekend.”
Dallenbach on Kyle Busch,
who led a record number of
laps at Chicagoland: “He is
just making everybody look
bad right now.”
Petty on Busch’s
attitude: “He knows there’s
a day when this is going to
come to an end, and he is
having fun doing it, that’s
the main thing.”
Weber on Kyle Busch
looking to overtake #48
Jimmie Johnson with two laps
to go: “Kyle Busch right on
his bumper.”
Petty: “I would say IN
Johnson’s bumper.”
Kyle Busch wins his
seventh race of the season
in the Sprint Cup Series
Kyle Busch thanking his
crew for the victory: “I’ve
got to thank these guys, I
gave up on myself. I’ve seen
Jimmie Johnson do that a few
times before. This is a
great season. Can you
believe this?”
