Dodge Motorsports Notes &
Quotes - Allstate 400 Final
Qualifying
RYAN NEWMAN (No. 12
Alltel Dodge Charger)
Qualified 3rd
HOW WAS YOUR QUALIFYING
RUN? “A great lap for our
Alltel Dodge. It felt like a
top-five run all the way
around the track. We had a
great day of practice
yesterday and it certainly
paid off today. This is a
tricky place to get around
because one mistake can
knock off a few tenths of a
second in a hurry.”
KASEY KAHNE (No. 9
Budweiser Dodge Charger)
Qualified 4th
WAS THAT WHAT YOU
EXPECTED ON YOUR QUALIFYING
RUN? “It was a good run. I
took too much time getting
down to the white line in
turn two, but other than
that, the car felt really
balanced. We had a chance to
get the pole; we just missed
it. The car was handling
really well thought. We just
need to work a little more
on getting it through turn
two.
WHAT WILL YOU FOCUS ON IN
THE AFTERNOON PRACTICE? “We
will focus on getting behind
some cars and see what it is
like trying to pass. That’s
going to be a key tomorrow,
being able to pass. Even if
you’re really good, you’re
still going to have to pass
cars. We need to work on
that and get the car to do
what we want in traffic.
That’s what we need.”
ELLIOTT SADLER (No. 19
Stanley Tools Dodge Charger)
Qualified 6th
HOW YOUR QUALIFYING RUN?
“It was a pretty decent lap
for our Stanley Tools Dodge.
We lost a couple hundred
RPMs on the motor and I’m
not really sure why that
happened. It was a pretty
good lap considering we went
out later in the qualifying
session. We’ll keep plugging
along. We’ve got today
behind us, so now we have to
work on some race trim stuff
and hopefully get it
consistent for some long
runs.”
KURT BUSCH (No 2. Miller
Lite Dodge Charger)
Qualified 7th
DESCRIBE YOUR QUALIFYING
LAP? “It was a good lap that
should get us a good
starting position. We’ll
take our Miller Lite Dodge
and go from there. Our car
has been good in some areas
and has struggled in other
areas. We have to work on
those shortcomings and get
our car better.”
WHEN DID YOU BRUSH THE
WALL? “We did that
yesterday. I went in turn
three a little two deep and
I couldn’t get it gathered
up before I brushed the
wall. The way these cars run
with the rear end kicked
out, you have to give
yourself two inches instead
of taking those two inches.”
JUAN PABLO MONTOYA (No.
42 Wrigley’s Big Red Slim
Pack Dodge Charger)
Qualified 13th
HOW WAS THE QUALIFYING
LAP? “I think if I can
finish second again, I would
be very happy. It’s been
rough the last few weeks for
us, but I feel like we are
getting better. Our team is
focusing on developing the
car, making them better and
the results are starting to
show. Our Big Red Dodge is
pretty fast right now and if
we can make some adjustments
during the final practices,
I think we have a shot to
run up front. Everybody at
Chip Ganassi is working
really hard and it’s great
to see.”
PATRICK CARPENTIER (No.
10 Sears Auto Center/Valvoline
Dodge Charger) Qualified
15th
HOW MUCH MORE DIFFICULT
WAS IT THIS WEEK AT INDY?
“It’s hard here because the
straightaways are so long.
You know, you kind of lose
perspective of the first
corner and for us, when
you’re not qualified you
always want to make sure
you’re in. I slowed down too
early for Turn 1 and lost a
tenth there but it was okay.
The car was pretty good. It
got a little bit tight but
I’m happy. We’ve got great
cars. For tomorrow we should
have fun but we’re in the
race so that’s great. We’re
starting probably top-20 so
that’s very good.”
REED SORENSON (No. 41
Target Dodge Charger)
Qualified 22nd
HOW WAS YOUR LAP? “The
run wasn’t very good. That’s
about where we were
yesterday. We picked up a
little bit, about the same
as everybody else. It’s not
an impound race, so I stayed
in it and brushed the wall a
little bit.
WHAT WILL THE TARGET
DODGE TEAM FOCUS ON IN THE
AFTERNOON PRACTICE SESSIONS?
“In race trim, we’re
fighting front grip really
bad, so we will work on
getting that better in
practice today. If we can do
that, it will be helpful for
the long runs tomorrow.
Tires really fall off bad
after six or seven laps, so
we will be trying to get it
to work through an entire
run. Last year, the car was
good on the first lap and
the last lap (Sorenson
started from the pole) we
run. We hope we can get it
like that for tomorrow’s
race.”
BOBBY LABONTE (No. 43
Cheerios/Totino’s Dodge
Charger) Qualified 27th
HOW WAS YOUR QUALIFYING
LAP? “Our Cheerios/Totino’s
Dodge was just a little too
tight. We ran a 90 (50.90
sec.) yesterday and picked
up four-tenths (of a second)
today. We made some good
changes on it, but I just
wish we could have been a
little better yesterday. For
qualifying today, we were
just too tight coming off
turns one and two, but good
off (turns) three and four.”
ROBBY GORDON (No. 7
Menards/Johns Manville Dodge
Charger) Qualified 29th
HOW WAS YOUR QUALIFYING
RUN? “I lost too much
momentum in (turns) one and
two. We made a big change
last night and didn’t know
what to expect and if you
look at our lap graph, we
were good down the
backstretch and in (turns)
three and four. Turns one
and two just killed my lap.
The changes we made with our
set-up gives us some
confidence heading into
tomorrow, so we’ll work on
some things in the final
practices later today and
see what happens.”
SAM HORNISH JR. (No. 77
Mobil 1 Dodge Charger)
Qualified 38th
HOW WAS YOUR LAP? “We
felt like we should have
picked up about four tenths
from yesterday. The car was
just bounding all around.
Something is not quite right
with it and really makes the
car hard to steer when it’s
like that. We’ve kind of
been fighting that problem
the last couple of weekends
and trying to figure out
what exactly is causing
that. It just doesn’t allow
you to steel the car
properly because of how much
it’s hopping. We’ll work on
it. We’ve got two more
practice sessions today and
hopefully we’ll get the
Mobil 1 Doge running a
little bit better.”
