Jeff Burton, No. 29
Holiday Inn Chevrolet
Watkins Glen Preview
NOTES:
· This Week’s Holiday Inn
Chevrolet at Watkins Glen
International … Jeff Burton
and the Holiday Inn Racing
team will unload Chassis No.
071 from the Richard
Childress Racing NASCAR
Nationwide Series stable
this weekend. Built new in
2007, Burton raced this
Holiday Inn Chevy to a
10th-place finish at Circuit
Gilles Villenueve in
Montreal last August. After
being equipped with all the
required 2008 updates, Scott
Wimmer drove this No. 29
machine to a seventh-place
finish at Mexico in April.
· Childress, A Champion
for Children … The Holiday
Inn Chevrolet will feature a
Childress Institute for
Pediatric Trauma decal on
the rear quarter-panel at
Watkins Glen. The Childress
Institute will work with
national and regional
research groups to pool
knowledge and data that can
be shared with healthcare
providers nationwide. There
is no one in the country
presently studying this
issue in a comprehensive
manner as Childress
Institute is targeted to
become. You are always going
to have injuries, despite
our preference to prevent
them, and some can’t be
fixed. But for the kids who
do get hurt, Childress
Institute would like to find
a better way to help them
and reduce their disability.

· Gaining Ground … Based
on Wimmer’s 11th-place
finish last weekend at
Circuit Gilles Villeneuve,
RCR’s No. 29 machine
maintained the fifth
position in the 2008 NNS
owners’ championship point
standings but made a dent in
the leader’s advantage. The
team now sits 434 markers
behind the leader and just
36 points out of third.
· Welcome Back, Burton …
Burton returns to the seat
of the Holiday Inn Chevy
after a three-race hiatus.
During that time, Wimmer
notched one top-five and two
top-11 finishes.
· Track Stats … In five
NNS starts at Watkins Glen,
Burton has earned two
top-five and four top-10
finishes. The South Boston,
Va., native has a 13.4
starting average and a 10.8
finishing average. He has
led 17 laps and collected
over $74,000 in prize money.
· Burton in the Loop …
o Driver Rating …
According to NASCAR’s Loop
Data Statistics, Burton is
fourth in the Driver Rating
(111.6) at Watkins Glen. The
Driver Rating is a formula
that combines the following
categories: wins, top-15
finishes, average running
position while on the lead
lap, average speed under
green, fastest lap, most
laps led and lead-lap
finishes. The maximum points
a driver can earn in each
race is 150 points. The
Driver Rating number is used
pre-race as a prediction
tool and post-race as a
performance evaluator.
o Average Running
Position … Meanwhile, the
41-year-old driver is ranked
fourth in the Average
Running Position category.
His average position over
the past three years at
Watkins Glen is 8.104. The
ARP is derived from taking
the sum of a driver’s
position on each lap and
dividing it by the number of
laps run in each race.
o Running Up Front … The
27-time NNS winner has spent
79.3 percent (130 of 164) of
laps running in the top 15
over the past three years at
Watkins Glen.
· RCR Road Course Recap …
In 22 previous NNS road
course starts, RCR has
posted two wins (Kevin
Harvick – Montreal 2007 and
Watkins Glen 2007), eight
top-five and 15 top-10
finishes. RCR-prepared
entries have also led 103
laps on road courses.
· Season Review … After
competing in just eight of
the 23 Nationwide Series
events to date in the 2008
season, Burton has notched
two top-five and five top-10
finishes and has led 39
laps. This weekend’s race is
the ninth of 12 that the
South Boston, Va., native is
slated to run.
· Meet the Press … Burton
will be available outside
the No. 31 AT&T transporter
to field questions from the
gathered media Friday,
August 8 at 10:40 a.m.
· Design the Holiday Inn
Racing Chevy … The Holiday
Inn Family of Brands --
Holiday Inn and Holiday Inn
Express -- will rev up race
fans' creativity with the
launch of its third annual
online "Design a Car"
contest. Through August 22,
2008, consumers can log on
to
http://www.holidayinn.com/designacar
to design a new paint scheme
for RCR’s No. 29 Holiday Inn
Chevrolet Monte Carlo SS and
submit their design for
judging. Wimmer and Burton
will select the top-three
designs and then invite the
fans to select the winning
paint scheme. The winning
design will be featured on
Wimmer's car at a NASCAR
Nationwide Series race in
November. The winner of this
year's "Design a Car"
contest will also receive a
trip for two to the race
with V.I.P. treatment that
includes a meeting with
Wimmer.
· Catch All the Twists
and Turns … The Zippo 200
from Watkins Glen
International will be
televised live on ABC
Saturday, August 9 beginning
at 2:30 p.m. Eastern
Daylight Time and broadcast
on the Motor Racing Network
and Sirius Satellite Radio.
Qualifying for the 24th race
on the 2008 NASCAR
Nationwide Series schedule
will be televised live on
ESPN2 the same day beginning
at 10 a.m. EDT.
JEFF BURTON QUOTES:
Watkins Glen is the first
and only road course race
you are running in the
Nationwide Series this
season. Is that a
disadvantage for you,
especially since the series
is coming from a road course
race in Montreal?
“In some ways it puts me
at a disadvantage because
the guys ran the cars in
Mexico and with them coming
off of Canada, they are
popping right back in the
same car at Watkins Glen.
That is a little bit of a
disadvantage. On the other
hand, I have an advantage on
some of the guys because I
get extra time in the Cup
car and I’ll have more track
time. The road course
specialist that will come in
and run the same car two
weekends in a row will be
hard to handle but I should
be able to make that up with
the amount of stock car
experience I have.”
What does it take to have
a good run in the Nationwide
Series car?
“With the way things are
today with the low
horsepower, it has a lot to
do with acceleration. Being
able to really get in the
gas early in the corners,
drive in the corners deep,
get the car to turn and
start accelerating as
quickly as you can is the
key to road course racing.
The more horsepower you pull
out, the more important it
is to get through the
corners fast. The sooner you
can get on the gas and the
percentage of time you are
in the throttle, is very
important when you have low
horsepower. So to me, it’s
all about being able to be
in the throttle for a long
period of time.
How different is it for
you to have your crews pit
the car on the opposite
side?
“It’s not that different.
You still need to get on pit
road clean and hit your
marks. For the driver, it’s
hitting your mark on the
right and not the left. It’s
not that big of a deal. You
are usually coming to pit
road by yourself at Watkins
Glen because there aren’t a
ton of cautions like the
ovals. It’s a little less
hectic so it makes it a
little easier.”
