Jeff Burton, No. 31 AT&T Chevrolet Impala SS Bristol Preview

NOTES:

· This Week’s AT&T Chevrolet at Bristol Motor Speedway … Jeff Burton will pilot chassis No. 243 from the Richard Childress Racing NASCAR Cup Series stable. Built new for 2008, this is the same car Burton raced to a sixth-place finish at Texas (started 35th) and to an eighth-place finish at Dover (started 38th). This RCR-prepared AT&T Chevy Impala SS has a 36.5 average starting position coupled with a 7.5 average finishing position.

· Burton in the Loop at Thunder Valley …

§ Stat Facts … In 29 NASCAR Cup starts at the half-mile oval, Burton has posted one win, eight top-five and 12 top-10 finishes. Since joining RCR in August 2004, Burton has posted two top-five and three top-10 finishes in four Sharpie 500 events and has finished no worse than 12th.

§ Keep on Running … Of the 3,510 laps contested over the last seven Cup Series events at BMS, Burton spent 2,307 of those laps (65.7%) running in the top 15 and holds a 13.7 finishing average. The Chase contender is also the sports’ fourth-best Closer. He has improved 11 positions over the last 10 percent of laps in each race.

§ Just an Average Guy … According to NASCAR’s loop data statistics, Burton is the series’ seventh-best in the Average Running Position category. Over the last seven events at the famed race track, Burton’s ARP is 12.7. That statistic is derived from the sum of his position on each lap divided by the number of laps run in each race.

§ Since We’re Talking Stats … Burton holds the seventh-best Driver Rating at the World’s Fastest Half-Mile with 94.5. The Driver Rating is a formula that combines the following categories: wins, finishes, top-15 finishes, average running position while on the lead lap, average speed under green, fastest lap, most laps led and lead-lap finishes. The maximum points a driver can earn in each race is 150 points. The Driver Rating number is used pre-race as a prediction tool and post-race as a performance evaluator.

· Racin’ for a Chase Spot … The South Boston, Va., native currently sits fifth in the championship point standings with three races remaining in NASCAR’s “Race to the Chase.” Burton can clinch a spot in this season’s Chase for the Cup if he leaves Bristol 20 points ahead of the current margin between his fifth-place and the 13th-place tally. Additionally, the 2008 Food City 500 winner will contend for the 2008 championship if he wins and leads the most laps.

· RCR at Bristol … In 105 Cup Series starts at Bristol, RCR boasts nine wins – seven with Dale Earnhardt, one with Kevin Harvick and one with Burton– three poles, 29 top-five and 49 top-10 finishes. In March, RCR-prepared race cars swept the top three positions in the Food City 500 when Burton took the checkered flag, Harvick finished second and Clint Bowyer rounded out the top three. Additionally, in 41 starts, RCR Nationwide Series teams have claimed six wins – one with Bowyer, four with Harvick and one with Jeff Green – four poles, 18 top-five and 22 top -10 finishes.

· The RCR Collection … In 23 races this season, RCR-prepared Sprint Cup Series entries have notched two wins (Burton – Bristol, Bowyer – Richmond), 12 top-five and 30 top-10 finishes. The Welcome, N.C.,-based race team has completed 19,139 laps in 2008 with four different drivers including Bowyer, Burton, Harvick and Ken Schrader. Meanwhile, RCR teams have logged 28,106 miles of competition this season and been on top of the leaderboard for 311 laps. Combined, all four RCR teams have earned just over $ 9.9 million in purse money this season.

· Bound for Bristol – Fan’s Victory of a Lifetime Heads to the Volunteer State … Prilosec OTC Victory of a Lifetime Sweepstakes winner Kathryn Cooley continues her ultimate NASCAR Fan’s season this weekend at Bristol Motor Speedway. This will be Cooley’s 11th race of her 20-race schedule with RCR’s No. 31 Cup team. Prior to the Sharpie 500, Cooley, along with her husband, will enjoy the speedway’s very own VIP hospitality event, The Half Mile Club, where they will enjoy gourmet meals, track tours and meet and greets with NASCAR Cup Series drivers.

· Meet the Press … Burton will be available inside the speedway’s infield media center Friday, August 22 at 10:50 a.m. to field questions from the gathered media.

· Catch the Action … Flag-to-flag coverage of the Sharpie 500 from Bristol Motor Speedway will take the green flag Saturday, Aug. 23 beginning at 7 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time on ESPN. The race will also be broadcast on the Performance Racing Network and Sirius Satellite Radio. Qualifying for the 24th points-paying races on the 2008 NASCAR Cup Series calendar will be televised live on SPEED Friday, Aug. 22 beginning at 3:30 p.m. EDT and will also broadcast live on PRN and Sirius Satellite Radio.

JEFF BURTON QUOTES:

Is Bristol one track you always dreamt of winning?

“Winning at Bristol is big. It’s an action packed race with so much going on. The way we won the race earlier in the year, with making a pass with a couple laps to go, was really exciting. It certainly is the highlight of year so far. For some reason, we typically run better in the fall race than we do in the spring race. Hopefully, we can put ourselves in position to do that again.”

From a driver’s standpoint, what is the night race at Bristol like?

“Bristol is a lot of fun to be quite honest. It’s stressful when you are racing for points -- it makes it tough. On the other hand, it’s a lot of fun. It’s very physical and very competitive. It is an emotionally draining race as well as being physically draining. There is never a chance to take a break. It’s challenging and can be very rewarding but it can also break your heart pretty quickly. We always go to Bristol with high hopes. We run well in the night races at Bristol so hopefully we can capitalize on that.”
