KANSAS CITY, Kan.
(September 27, 2008) -- When
Denny Hamlin's Camry crossed
the finish line first at
Kansas Speedway in Saturday
afternoon's NASCAR
Nationwide Series (NNS) race
at Kansas Speedway, it
enabled Toyota to clinch its
first NNS manufacturer's
championship in its second
year of series competition.
This marks the third time
that Toyota has earned a
NASCAR manufacturer's title
since the start of the 2004
season. In each of the past
two years (2006 and 2007),
Toyota has earned
manufacturer's titles in the
NASCAR Craftsman Truck
Series (NCTS). The
performance of four teams
fielding six Camrys -- Braun
Racing, Germain Racing, Joe
Gibbs Racing and Michael
Waltrip Racing -- all
contributed to the first
Nationwide Series
manufacturer's title earning
Toyota the Bill France
Performance Cup. Camry
Nationwide Series drivers
have combined to produce 18
victories, 48 top-five
finishes, 85 top-10 results
and 11 pole positions in the
first 30 events of the 2008
season. "Toyota's
accomplishments are the
result of hard work and
achievement by all of our
race teams -- Braun Racing,
Joe Gibbs Racing, Germain
Racing and Michael Waltrip
Racing -- working in
conjunction with TRD, U.S.A.
(Toyota Racing Development)
and Triad," said Lee White,
TRD's president and general
manager. "All the tireless
efforts during the
off-season, at pre-season
testing and throughout the
season, in combination with
a talented driver line-up,
have produced the
exceptional results that
yielded this championship."
This year, in the team's
inaugural season fielding
Toyota Camrys, Joe Gibbs
Racing (JGR) enjoyed a
record-setting campaign. The
JGR No. 18 (eight wins) and
No. 20 (nine wins) Camry
entries have combined for 17
victories in 2008 --
establishing the series
record for most wins by one
NNS organization in a single
season. JGR drivers Kyle
Busch (seven), Tony Stewart
(five), Denny Hamlin (four)
and Joey Logano (one)
combined for the team's 17
NNS wins. Along with JGR's
17 NNS wins in 2008, Braun
Racing earned a triumph in
May with Busch behind the
steering wheel. "What a
great accomplishment for
Toyota to come into this
sport and two years later
lock up a championship in
the Nationwide Series --
that means a lot," said
Hamlin, after the Kansas
race.
This season, Busch leads
the Camry contingent with
eight NNS victories,
including wins at Texas
(April 5), Phoenix (April
11), Mexico City (April 20),
Charlotte (May 24),
Chicagoland (July 11),
Indianapolis (July 26),
California (Aug. 30) and
Dover (Sept. 20). Stewart
finished ahead of the pack
in his No. 20 Camry at
Daytona (Feb. 16),
California (Feb. 25),
Talladega (April 26),
Darlington (May 9) and New
Hampshire (June 28), and
Hamlin had wins at Richmond
(May 2), Dover (May 31),
Daytona (July 4) and Kansas
(Sept. 27). In just his
third NNS race, Logano
crossed the finish line
first at Kentucky (June 14)
to become the youngest NNS
race-winner in series
history (18 years, 21 days).
A total of 16 different
drivers have participated in
the Nationwide Series in a
Camry this year, and Jason
Leffler and Reutimann have
started every Nationwide
Series race since Toyota
entered the series in 2007
(65 races). Since joining
the Nationwide Series in
2007, Camrys have won 20
races and captured 15 pole
positions.
