Phoenix, (Nov. 11, 2008)
– The second to last stop of
the 2008 racing season at
Phoenix International
Raceway for the Checker Auto
Parts 500, had stars and
fans of the Sprint Cup
Series experiencing severe
heartburn. From rain-delays
in the desert and “America’s
Funniest Home Videos”
bumping race coverage, to
big-name drivers in danger
of going winless and Jimmy
Johnson all but locking in
the Championship, drivers
and fans experienced more
than a few TUMSâ moments in
Phoenix. Each weekend PRN
lead anchor Doug Rice picks
the Top 10 TUMS Moments from
the weekend’s racing
activities.
This week’s Top 10 TUMS
honors go to:
10. The Magical Mystery
Tour season continued for
Sam Hornish Jr. after he
once again found himself
pointed the wrong way on the
race-track. Memories of his
IRL Championship and Indy
500 win must seem like
another lifetime ago.
9. Don’t know if this is
linked to global warming but
a 26-minute red flag for
rain … are you kidding! The
last time I checked Phoenix
was still in the middle of
the desert.
8. A big crash on lap 273
involved no less than seven
cars and Scott Speed wound
up with David Gilliland’s
car as a hood ornament.
7. Reed Sorenson made
contact with Kyle Busch, cut
a tire and wound up in the
wall. It’s been that kind of
season for the favorite son
of Peachtree City, GA.
6. In what could be his
last ever race for Petty
Enterprise, Kyle Petty
finished a dismal 39th. This
sport could really use a
competitive Kyle and I wish
him the best of luck in
whatever path he chooses.
5. Martin Truex Jr.
barely took the green flag
before he had to park his
Chevy after just 27
circuits.
4. Late in the race A.J.
Allmendinger got into Matt
Kenseth and Tony Stewart got
swept into that whole mess.
Kenseth has just one more
chance to salvage a victory
this season.
3. Once again Jeff Gordon
made the TUMS Top Ten list.
His Chevy had engine
problems and he was
sidelined early. He has one
last chance to make it 15
straight years with a
victory. If Gordon wants to
avoid being shutout, he will
have to win a track where
he’s never seen a checkered
flag.
2. Carl Edwards. Any
chance that Edwards had of
pulling the title upset
disappeared with Jimmie
Johnson’s convincing win in
Phoenix.
1. TUMS are needed for
all the Eastern and Central
time zone race fans who were
cheated out of seeing the
end of the race when ABC
moved its race coverage to
ESPN2 so ABC could broadcast
“America’s Funniest Home
Videos.” You’ve got to be
kidding! NASCAR was bumped
off the network not for
“Desperate Housewives” or
“Brothers & Sisters” but for
“America’s Funniest Home
Videos!” I guess America
just can’t get enough seeing
dads get hit below the belt
with a ball bat or a drunken
bride fall in the pool.
Actually I sort of like
seeing the brides hit the
water, but it still doesn’t
excuse the ill-timed switch.
Stay tuned each week for
the Top 10 TUMS Moments to
see which drivers and teams
are most in need of TUMS
fast relief. For more
