Former workers from
DEI and ECR listed on
website to find employment
MOORESVILLE, NC – The
recent downsizing of many
NASCAR teams has prompted
the creation of a networking
and resume posting site
www.DontCheckUp.com ;
unveiled on December 1,
2008. The site was created
for displaced workers in the
motorsports industry seeking
employment and to help with
the challenges arising from
becwoming unemployed.
The idea of Don Gemmell,
one of 113 recently let go
from Dale Earnhardt, Inc.,
the site will list the names
of almost 13 people recently
laid off or terminated from
their NASCAR teams. The site
will be available to list
the names, resumes and
contact info for each person
and is categorized by each
department from DEI and
Earnhardt Childress Racing
engines. If displaced
employees from other race
shops see a benefit, the
site can be expanded to
include their information,
as well.
This website will enable
team owners and department
heads to find qualified and
quality people to fill any
immediate openings they may
have in their race shops;
and in the near future.
Companies from outside the
motorsports industry are
encouraged to look through
the list of talented people
available, as well
“The outplacement service
retained by DEI for us at
our termination provided
eight hours training,” said
Gemmell, who worked in
Motorsports Operations.
“But, only about 30 of the
113 have taken advantage of
it, so far.
“As I listened to them
and talked to others who
were also losing their jobs,
I started to think of ways
we could work together
instead of individually. So,
after input from some of the
group we put together
www.DontCheckUp.com to
help.”
“Help from a wide variety
of organizations, including
the Mooresville Chamber of
Commerce and Mooresville
Economic Development
Corporation, is ramping up
and we need to be able to
keep the providers in
contact with the people in
need.”
The group hopes to work
closely with the North
Carolina Motorsports
Association which recently
assisted in the forming of a
Motorsports Employment Task
Force to help other
displaced NASCAR workers.
Put together by The Wheeler
Group of Humpy Wheeler, the
METF hopes to help almost
700 people who recently lost
their NASCAR-related jobs.
“What we are offering on
our site is a group of
experienced workers ready to
interview right now,”
Gemmell said. “We are going
to help them edit, or even
write, their resumes to post
for future employers review.
“This sport used to be
all about ‘who you knew’ but
since its becoming more
specialized, its more about
‘what you know and can do’
now. That’s where
www.DontCheckUp.com can be
of immediate help to
everyone.”
The phrase, Don’t Check
Up, is used by racers
telling each other not to
slow down when things get
rough or you’re unsure; but
to keep on going and don’t
live life with the brakes
on. That phrase applies to
life on, and off, the track
to those in the industry;
especially now.
