Another Nationwide Series race and another win for Kyle Busch. This was the story at Iowa Speedway Saturday night. Busch led four times for a race high 209 laps and won in convincing fashion, besting runner-up Kevin Harvick by 2.030 seconds. This win marks Busch’s 75th NASCAR victory.
“It’s pretty phenomenal the race cars these guys put out,” Busch said. “I’m real proud of those guys and I can’t thank them enough. Z-Line Designs…NOS Energy Drink, Combos, Marquis Jets, Gillette, the fans—man what an awesome turnout this week. It was phenomenal. It was really, really cool,” said Busch.
Jason Leffler was the highest-finishing Nationwide Series only competitor in third. Points leader Brad Keselowski finished fourth and pole sitter Trevor Bayne finished fifth.
“The last pit stop, we took two and a bunch of guys took four,” said Keselowski. “I agree with our strategy. Just so many guys took two that we just couldn’t get by all of them. It was a solid fourth-place for us,” Keselowski concluded. Carl Edwards finished 10th and now trails Keselowski by 231 points.
The most serious incident of the race occurred on lap 94 when Colin Braun blew a tire. Brian Keselowski was unable to avoid Braun and piled into him, briefly lifting Braun’s car off the ground. Brendan Gaughan, Mark Green, and Paul Menard were also involved. All but Menard were eliminated from further contention. The race was red flagged for 15 minutes and 55 seconds to allow for cleanup.
Reed Sorenson was also involved in a serious incident after a right front tire blew. Sorenson hit the wall hard and was briefly on fire. “The Dollar General Camry wasn’t too bad for not even getting to practice it,” Sorenson said. “I think the reason we blew a right-front was that we had some type of brake cooling issue…this is the first DNF for us and hopefully we don’t have any more,” said Sorenson.
Other drivers involved in incidents included Tayler Malsam, Brian Scott, and Morgan Shepherd.
Michael McDowell led double-duty drivers not finishing in the top 10 with a 13th place finish. Paul Menard placed 16th; Joe Nemechek 19th. Sorenson finished 36th after his accident.
The series travels to Watkins Glen next weekend for the Zippo 200. Marcos Ambrose is the defending champion.
