Austin Dillon Disqualified from Truck Race at Talladega
by Mary Jo Buchanan

Posted on 10/30/2009

Austin Dillon, grandson of Richard Childress and son of racer Mike Dillon, was disqualified from the NASCAR Camping World Truck race at Talladega.  His No. 3 race truck failed post-qualifying inspection due to not meeting the height requirements.

Dillon will be replaced by Jennifer Jo Cobb, who had thought she was packing her bags to go back home after failing to qualify.

This is not the first time that the 18 year old Childress progeny has been disqualified from a race venue.  Dillon's development team had a win taken away from them at Green Valley Speedway in the GVS Crate Nationals in July of this year.

The Speedway ruled that the crankshaft in the No. 3 late model that Dillon had driven had been illegally modified. Dillon and Richard Childress Racing appealed the decision but the appeal was denied and the win went to Shannon Buckingham.

Dillon has been trying to break into NASCAR's upper echelon of racing by trying to qualify for several Nationwide and Truck races this season.  Prior to 2009, Dillon had raced in the Camping World Series East Series, finishing second in the points standings and winning the Sunoco Rookie of the Year honors.

Dillon had been running in the 21st position in practice at Talladega Superspeedway.  He had a good qualifying run at the fast track, until he was repeatedly sent through post-qualifying inspection.

After several times through the inspection station and under intense NASCAR official scrutiny, it was determined that Dillon's race truck did not meet the template specifications and was disqualified from the race.

Colin Braun took the pole honors for Saturday's Camping World Truck Series Mountain Dew 250.
