Mark Martin has a reputation as one of the best NASCAR drivers in the sport today. His hard work, dedication and clean driving style is well known and he’s often used as an example to young drivers coming into the sport.

Martin has finished in 2^nd place four times in the Cup standings and has often been referred to as “the greatest driver never to win a championship.”

Mark, however, takes exception to that statement.

“My record does not stand up against the greats in this business,” he said.

In Mark’s mind his biggest asset is the willingness to work hard and the desire to play by the rules.

“I'm the guy that rolls up my sleeves, and I never put that mask on that I talked about and pulled the gun out.  I work real hard and try to win the game, whatever it is, you know, fair and square.”

Mark may be modest about his achievements but his peers are quick to point out just what he means to the entire NASCAR community.

Jimmie Johnson remembers coming up through the ranks and how all the young drivers looked to Mark and aspired to emulate him.

“You are one of the greatest,” Johnson told him. “We all think the world of you and respect the hell out of you.”

Another fan of Mark Martin is NASCAR legend Bobby Allison. When Jack Rousch asked him many years ago who he should put in one of his racecars, Allison recommended Martin.

“I recognized his talent and enthusiasm. So I said why don’t you try Mark Martin, and he did.”

The rest, as they say, is history.

This weekend going into the race at Homestead, Martin sits second in the points standings.  Can he finally break the second place curse and secure the Championship he’s been chasing his entire career?

For Martin, this race will be no different than any other. His goal will be the same as it is for every race—to win.

“I'm not looking over my shoulder or looking ahead, either one,” Mark said.  “Every time I strap in that racecar, I'd like to be the fastest dude out there. “
