Carl Edwards applies pressure, capitalizes on Marcos Ambrose's mistake to win at Montreal
by Pamela

Posted on 8/30/2009

Marcos Ambrose led 60 laps and dominated Sunday’s Nationwide Series race at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve until the final turn of the final lap. Hard charging Carl Edwards put the pressure on during the final lap of the race and Ambrose made one mistake entering the Turn 13, hopping over the curbing in a sideways slide right out of Victory Lane, again.

“I made a mistake at the end there and just lost it," Ambrose said. "Carl put pressure on in the hairpin. He got a great run, and it turned into a drag race. I couldn’t make the turn, bounced off the curb, and Carl slingshotted the corner. When you’re on the wrong side of it, it’s pretty tough.”

Edwards made the pass and went on to capture his first career road course win.

“The difference was the tires and the way the track was changing," Edwards said. "As soon as it gets dry, there’s so much more grip, and there were places out there I saw that had a little more grip. Maybe I could just see better through my windshield.”

For the second straight year, the cars finished prepared for wet conditions. With 13 laps to go, due to rain and wet conditions, rain tires were placed on the cars, windshield wipers were equipped and Rain-X applied.

The race was plagued by 11 caution flags and ended one lap longer than scheduled due to a green-white-checkered finish.

Points leader Kyle Busch was caught up in a first-turn pileup after the final restart. Busch was running fourth at the time of the accident but finished 10th, his points lead cut to 192 over Edwards.

Andrew Ranger finished third, Jacques Villeneuve fourth and Brad Keselowski fifth.

Next up on the series schedule is Atlanta Motor Speedway Saturday night at 6:30 p.m ET.
