TOYOTA NASCAR Nationwide Series (NNS)
Post-Race Notes & Quotes
Kansas Speedway - October 3, 2009
Joey Logano visited victory lane for the fourth time this season when he won Saturday's NASCAR Nationwide Series
(NNS) race at Kansas Speedway.
Kyle Busch finished second at Kansas to make it the fifth one-two finish for Joe Gibbs Racing in 2009.
With 173 laps led at Kansas, Busch set a new series record by leading 2,226 laps in 2009. Sam Ard previously held the
record with 2,127 laps led in a single season (set in 1984).
Scott Speed (eighth) and Reed Sorenson (10th) also posted top-10 finishes for Toyota.
Camry drivers Jason Leffler (11th), Brian Scott (14th), Brian Vickers (28th), Michael Annett (30th) and Michael
McDowell (39th) were also in the field.
Busch extended his lead in the NNS point standings following Kansas, and now sits 245 points ahead of second-place Carl
Edwards. Leffler (fourth) is also in the top-five in points after 29 of 35 races.
JOEY LOGANO, No. 20 GameStop/Our House Party Toyota Camry, Joe Gibbs Racing
Finishing Position: 1st
How does this victory feel?
"This is awesome. From last week to now -- talk about 'A to Z,' that's awesome. I needed a win to stop everyone talking
about me if I'm going to be alright after that roll. I think this should prove it. This is awesome for this whole 20 bunch. They
needed a win and it's awesome to give this GameStop Our House Party Toyota back in here. This is a blast racing this car."
How'd you pass Kyle Busch for the win?
"Dig down deep and give it all I got. I felt like I had a good restart and the 88 (Brad Keselowski) was pushing the 18 (Kyle
Busch) ahead and I can't get in front of him like that. That was all I had, I knew I wasn't going to get him on the bottom. I just
get real aero-tight all day. I couldn't pass on the bottom. I started working the top and driving my guts out for everything it
was worth. Driving in and stopping him 'friggen,' right on the gas. I was driving my brains out and it was fun. These guys
deserve it. They needed to be back in victory lane. They're a winning team and getting them back in here feels great."
What does it mean to see your team with you in victory lane?
"It's great. I couldn't ask for anything better. These guys, Dave (Rogers, crew chief) probably gave me the biggest pep talk
I've ever had before the race started. That's something that goes a long way for me. You pump me up, I go. That's pretty
funny, he asked me before the last restart how hungry I was and I said, 'I'm starving. ' We got it here."
Are you surprised you won today's race?
"He (Kyle Busch) dominated the race, no kidding on that. I gave it all I got and dug as hard as I could every lap for everything
I'm worth. After I got by the 88 (Brad Keselowski) on the restart, I thought I had a shot at it. I felt like I was pretty good the
long green flag run before the restart and then there was another restart that I felt like I was gaining on him. I knew I had to go
to the high side. My car was too aero-tight when we got behind cars so we had to go where no one was pretty much for me to
go fast. I got out there, I had a big run and got outside of him and kept digging. It was a blast."
What happened with that three-wide pass you attempted on Brad Keselowski and Greg Biffle?
"I was laughing under the last caution about that. I was talking to my spotter about what he thought about that. I came off
(turn) four, when cars get door-to-door, aero-wise it just slows these cars down so much. I had a run and I was like, 'I don't
know what to do with this thing.' So, I just sent it in there and it worked out for the best. We got past one car out of it. It's the
end of the race and you have to make some desperate moves sometimes."
What was the difference in your race car at the end?
"I don't know. We adjusted on this car all day. We kept freeing it up and it'd get close and then it would go back the other
way and get close again. I felt like after our last pit stop was too loose to start, this is going to be good, it's going to tighten up
a bit and be right there by the end of the run, which it was. It was perfect, ran out perfect for us."
JOEY LOGANO, No. 20 GameStop Toyota Camry, Joe Gibbs Racing (continued)
Does it feel like you have to pass Kyle Busch late in the race to win?
"Is it every one I've got the same way? I think it is. Four out of five -- that's interesting to me. I never think that. I was
sitting there after our last pit stop, we came out and I was chasing the car everywhere -- she was loose. It was going to be
good, this is a good thing. It's been tightening up on me. The restart happened and we got by the 88 (Brad Keselowski) and on
the last restart I was able -- had a run on Kyle (Busch) on the restart getting underneath him but once we got underneath him it
was dead sideways chasing this thing. I was trying not to wreck my teammate and I had to rethink this and try something else.
That's when I started moving around."
DAVE ROGERS, crew chief, No. 20 GameStop Toyota Camry, Joe Gibbs Racing
What was your key to winning today's race?
"From top of the pit box, our teammate really beat us all day. They just had a better race car, a faster race car. They were
making small adjustments. We communicate back and forth with them throughout the race over the computer. They were
tweaking on their car and I knew they were better than us. We had Joey (Logano) in the car here, and we're not points racing,
we're here to win, so we were throwing the kitchen sink at it. We were throwing a 'Hail Mary' every single pit stop. There we
had to make a full fuel run, we knew we'd been tight all day so I really freed it up. My prayer was, 'Please don't let this kid
wreck in the first five laps' because we weren't going to be loose and we were and lost a couple spots. It just put off at the end
that it was good enough, 60 laps into a run for Joey (Logano) to do what Joey does."
KYLE BUSCH, No. 18 NOS Energy Drink Toyota Camry, Joe Gibbs Racing
Finishing Position: 2nd
How did the race unfold for you today?
"We had a great race car and we came home second today. The NOS Energy Drink Camry was good. The guys did a great job
working on it all weekend long and made it the best car out there all day. Unfortunately, I got beat by another driver. It just
wasn't meant to be. It wasn't our day today, I guess. Unfortunately, we're sitting here talking about a second-place finish."
Were enough adjustments made on your race car during the final pit stop?
"Yeah. We adjusted the car. Actually, I was too loose. I almost spun out underneath Brian Vickers when Greg Biffle was
behind me -- I should have wrecked. But, (I) held on to it. I guess since I should have wrecked there, I wasn't meant to win
today. It kind of balances out, I guess."
What did you see and feel during those last few laps?
"I knew he (Joey Logano) had started working the top side in order to start getting some momentum built up and he was better
up there. I didn't feel like I needed to go up there. I felt like I was strong on the bottom. I ran the bottom all day long and felt
like I could hold him off. But, he got a good run through (turns) three and four and got to my outside before I could shut the
door on him. He got by me -- as soon as he built the plane (draft), it's over."
Did you see any problems with the seams on the track?
"I didn't see any problems with the seams. They were fine to me. This place has always been bad for that, even five years ago
it was bad with that. I've recognized to try not to run on any seams and run in between them. I don't have any problems
because I don't run over them that much."
How frustrating is it to dominate the race and not win?
"It's pretty self explanatory -- you just said it yourself -- it is frustrating. We had a great race car today. We were good in the
points. I've only done that about 12 times this year, so it ain't the first time and it certainly ain't going to be the last time.
We're looking for wins. I'd love to break that win record, but it doesn't look like it's going to happen this year. I'm running
out of races. Unfortunately, I'll have to wait another year -- maybe when I'm not racing for points and can go for broke instead
of having to bide my time and keep my car underneath me and not race too hard at the end."
Do you care about the reaction you receive from the fans?
"I don't like to lose, so I'll show my disappointment as I show it. I am who I am and everybody else is who they are. So, if
everybody worries about who they are, then life will be better."
SCOTT SPEED, No. 99 Red Bull Toyota Camry, Michael Waltrip Racing
Finishing Position: 8th
Can you talk about your race?
"We had a good car all weekend. We missed a few things and should have had a top-three finish. We made good decisions
and aim to continue to bring home a solid finish next week in Toyota's backyard."
REED SORENSON, No. 10 AccuDoc Toyota Camry, Braun Racing
Finishing Position: 10th
JASON LEFFLER, No. 38 Great Clips Toyota Camry, Braun Racing
Finishing Position: 11th
BRIAN SCOTT, No. 11 Ridemakerz.com Toyota Camry, CJM Racing
Finishing Position: 14th
How was your race?
"Our No. 11 Ridemakerz Toyota Camry was good. It was a fifth-place car all day. We were running up there and restarted
with about 15 to go and I got greedy and tried to put myself in position and it didn't stick. We ended up getting freight trained
because I got stuck in the middle. The caution came out there for the last time and we came in and got tires, tried to be a hero,
work our way up and ended up finishing 14th. This car deserved to be about a fifth-place car and like I said, I got greedy and
cost this team about 10 positions. It's my fault, it was better than that."
Was that final pit stop to change tires?
"It was going to be hard to pass those guys with equal tires. So, we came in and got fresh tires and just tried to make
something happen."
BRIAN VICKERS, No. 32 Dollar General Stores Toyota Camry, Braun Racing
Finishing Position: 28th
MICHAEL ANNETT, No. 15 Pilot Travel Centers Toyota Camry, Germain Racing
Finishing Position: 30th
MICHAEL McDOWELL, No. 47 JTG-Daugherty Racing Toyota Camry, JTG-Daugherty Racing
Finishing Position: 39th
