Clint Bowyer, No. 33 BB&T Chevrolet Impala SS - Talladega Preview
Posted On 10/27/2009 3:37:18 PM

NOTES:

· This Week’s BB&T Chevrolet at Talladega Superspeedway … Clint Bowyer will pilot Chassis No. 260 from Richard Childress Racing’s NASCAR Sprint Cup Series stable. Built new for 2008, Mike Wallace piloted this Chevrolet to a 30th-place finish at Talladega Superspeedway last October. It made its 2009 debut in the season-opening Daytona 500 in February where Bowyer finished fourth. Most recently, Bowyer raced this Impala SS to a 29th-place finish at Daytona in July after being caught up in a mid-race accident.

· Talladega Facts … In seven NASCAR Sprint Cup Series starts at Talladega Superspeedway, Bowyer boasts one top-five and two top-10 finishes. His best finish of fifth came in the October 2008 running of the 500-mile race.

· Through 32 Races … Over the season’s first 32 races, Bowyer has accumulated four top-five and 14 top-10 finishes, an average start of 17.2 and an average finish of 15.6. The two-time NSCS winner has led 40 laps of competition and has completed 9,054 of the 9,388 (96.4 percent) laps contested thus far.

· Rearview Mirror … Bowyer appeared to have a top-10 finish lined up in last Sunday’s NSCS race at Martinsville Speedway but, after being hit with a late-race speeding penalty exiting pit road, he was credited with a 19th-place finish that does not reflect the strong performance of the BB&T Racing Team.

· Get to the Points … Bowyer’s 19th-place finish at Martinsville Speedway allowed him to maintain the 15th position in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series point standings. Out of the Chase field, the race for 13th place is on. Bowyer trails the current position holder, Kyle Busch, by 115 markers.

· Had We Made It … Bowyer has accumulated 751 points over the six most recent Sprint Cup Series races. That point total is greater than chasers Denny Hamlin (726), Carl Edwards (690), Kasey Kahne (639) and Brian Vickers (563). With bonus points factored in, Bowyer would rank ninth in the point standings had he made the 2009 Chase for the Championship.

· RCR at Talladega … Richard Childress boasts nine victories at the storied Alabama race track - all of them coming with Dale Earnhardt. Additionally, in 116 starts, RCR boasts four poles, 29 top-five, 48 top-10 finishes and just over $8 million in earnings.

· Happy 40th Anniversary, RCR … Childress competed as a driver in Talladega’s inaugural race in 1969 and used his winnings from that race weekend to help start RCR. He drove the No. 13 Chevrolet to a 23rd-place finish after a broken axle forced him to call it a day 80 laps into the 188-lap event. Forty years later, Childress has captured 12 NASCAR championships, 89 Sprint Cup Series victories, 55 Nationwide Series wins and 20 Camping World Truck Series trophies.

· The Collective RCR … In 32 races this season, RCR’s four NASCAR Sprint Cup Series entries have notched nine top-five and 31 top-10 finishes. The No. 29 team kicked off the 2009 season with a win in the Budweiser Shootout at Daytona. RCR-prepared cars have also completed 36,693 laps with four different drivers including Jeff Burton, Bowyer, Kevin Harvick and Casey Mears. RCR teams have led 192 laps and all four teams have earned just shy of $18.5 million combined purse money in 2009.

Final Ride for BB&T in ‘09 … Talladega will mark the final race of the 2009 season where Bowyer’s Chevrolet Impala SS will sport the burgundy, white and gold paint scheme of Winston-Salem, N.C.,- based BB&T. The sponsor will once again support Bowyer’s efforts for the 2010 season.
Richard Childress Race Car Technology at Forsyth Tech … The motorsports technology program at Forsyth Technical Community College has been renamed Richard Childress Race Car Technology at Forsyth Tech. Richard Childress Racing has a long-standing relationship with Forsyth Tech and employs a number of its graduates. Forsyth Tech has been named a Center of Excellence for Motorsports by the North Carolina Motorsports Consortium. Childress was on-hand for the October 27 announcement that was held on the campus in Winston-Salem, N.C.
Last Time at Talladega … Bowyer and the No. 33 team headed to Talladega with a brand-new Chevrolet Impala SS with high hopes of a strong finish when the series last visited the 2.66-mile speedway in April. Unfortunately, it wasn’t meant to be for the Richard Childress Racing team, as Bowyer was involved in a lap-seven accident that eliminated him from contention.
Where’s the Nearest ATM? … BB&T has you covered. With 35 branches located within 60 miles of Talladega Superspeedway, you are never far from the banking support you may need while at the track this weekend.
RCR Firsts … Forty years ago, the Welcome, N.C.,-based organization competed in its first Sprint Cup Series race at Talladega Superspeedway. RCR’s first Sprint Cup Series win came in 1983 at the now defunct Riverside (Calif.) International Speedway with driver Ricky Rudd. Harvick captured RCR’s first Nationwide Series win in 2000 at Bristol Motor Speedway while Mike Skinner earned its first Camping World Truck Series victory in the series’ inaugural race at Phoenix International Raceway. In 1983, Childress won his first NASCAR championship as a team owner with Dale Earnhardt in the Sprint Cup Series before Skinner took home the title in the Camping World Truck Series in 1995. Harvick brought home RCR’s first Nationwide Series championship in 2001, making Childress the first team owner to capture championships in all three of NASCAR’s national series.

CLINT BOWYER QUOTE:

The new car seems to be made for Talladega, it seems like it’s a great package there.

“I think the biggest thing with the new car is that you can bump draft and not pick up the rear wheels of the car in front of you and spin them out. It’ll shove them forward and actually hurt you, whereas, with the old car, you could knock the guy out of your way and get back going again and it would help you. I like the way the car is built for the superspeedways and I think it produces some great racing.”
