With two solid practice sessions Friday and narrowly missing the cut for the second segment of qualifying at Phoenix International Raceway (PIR), James Buescher rolled off the grid for the Blue Jeans Go Green 200 in the 16th position. When the green flag turned the field loose, Buescher wasted no time advancing his position going three-wide on the first lap.
When Roush Fenway Racing (RFR) rookie Chris Buescher takes to the track at Phoenix International Raceway this week, not only will he be making his season debut, but he will step into a long line of success behind the wheel of RFR’s iconic No. 60 NNS Ford.
“It was different. You definitely have to have different strategies. You have to pick and choose the runs you’re going to make and all of what’s going to go on to keep your stuff cool. Our Skittles Toyota was third after the first one (session) and seventh now. It’s never any fun when you’re on the losing end of it.”
“There were points in time where it is extremely chaotic especially after a caution and when the track first opens when you have all the race cars. A couple of cautions could really create an issue for people, but we just had one today. Everybody was able to get out and get their laps and the track opened back up towards the end of that opening session."
“We had a really fast car and there is some pride to be taken in being the first one to win a Sprint Cup pole in this format. I am sure it will undergo a few adjustments along the way but it is very rewarding and a testament to my team and how fast of a car they gave me."
“I am the first loser, oh well. The guys did a great job. Team Penske being one and two in the first time out doing this thing just goes to show all the hard work over the off-season. Phoenix, the first race track we go to where handling comes into play."
