Kasey Kahne at Watkins Glen International, by the numbers… Kasey Kahne has made just one NASCAR Nationwide Series (NNS) start at Watkins Glen. In 2005, the veteran driver started from the outside pole and went on to finish 13th.

In NASCAR Sprint Cup Series competition, Kahne has made a total of eight starts at the 2.54-mile road course, finishing inside the top-20 five times. His best performances include a pair of 14th-place finishes in 2004 and 2008. He has an average start of 16.9 and an average finish of 19.1 with zero DNF’s.

Road trip to Knoxville… En route to Watkins Glen International, Kahne will be making a stop in Knoxville, Iowa to support his Kasey Kahne Racing drivers and teams as they set out to win the famed Knoxville Nationals. KKR has three drivers vying for the elite win: Cody Darrah, Joey Saldana and Brad Sweet.

Camaro Giveaway to Celebrate Their Birthday!

Great Clips is celebrating their 30th birthday by giving away a 2012 Camaro! In addition, three lucky winners will win a trip to November’s Great Clips 200 at Phoenix International Raceway! Just sign up to win by texting CAMARO to 47328 (Canadian residents text CAMARO to 77777) or go to www.greatclips.com to enter or get more details. The sweepstakes runs now through August 15th. Three finalists will be chosen after August 15th, and they will win a trip for themselves and a guest to attend the Great Clips 200 Nationwide race in Phoenix, AZ on November 10th. Each finalist will be given a key to the Camaro – but only one will have the “lucky key” that will start the car and win!

Who’s on the pit box? Mike Shiplett joined Turner Motorsports in 2012 and has a unique role as he calls the shots for both a veteran (Kasey Kahne) and a rookie (Sweet). It is a reunion of sorts for Kahne and Shiplett, who were paired together in the NNS during the 2007 season and put down impressive results, including two victories (Charlotte Motor Speedway and Bristol Motor Speedway, spring events).

This Week’s Impala… The No. 38 team will unload chassis 307 in this weekend’s Zippo 200 at The Glen. This is the same chassis Sweet raced at Road America where he started 16th and finished 20th.

Kahne and Sweet: a unique combination… Not only are Kahne and Sweet good friends off the track, but the veteran is serving as mentor to Sweet as he makes the transition from open-wheel competition to stock cars. Sweet was handpicked by Kahne in 2008 to drive for Kasey Kahne Racing (KKR) where he has since experienced tremendous success in the World of Outlaws Series. Sweet will continue to compete on a limited basis for KKR when he is not behind the wheel of the No. 38 Great Clips machine in the NNS. You can expect Kahne to be very involved and present in the NNS garage when Sweet is behind the wheel of the No. 38, as he will closely monitor his progress and offer encouragement.

Kahne brought Great Clips their first win! From 2003-2005, Kahne and his sponsor, Great Clips, Inc., reached momentous milestones, including capturing Kahne’s first Nationwide Series victory in 2003 at Homestead-Miami Speedway. It was also Great Clips’ first win as a primary sponsor. In 2005, Kahne captured his second career win at Texas Motor Speedway before leaving the Nationwide Series to allow more time for his Sprint Cup Series efforts.

Great Clips goes racing with the World of Outlaws in 2012! Great Clips serves as sponsor for KKR driver Joey Saldana this year in the World of Outlaws series. The Minneapolis-based company has been a sponsor of KKR for the past two seasons. This year, they will be featured on all three KKR entries – as a primary sponsor on the #9 with Saldana as well as associate sponsor placement on Brad Sweet’s #49 and Cody Darrah’s #5 World of Outlaws cars.

12 Years and Counting… Great Clips, Inc. is currently the longest-running sponsor in the NNS and has used the Nationwide Series as their primary marketing platform for the last 11 years. Their sponsorship began in 2000 with Akins Motorsports as they climbed on board to sponsor the team’s No. 38 entry with driver, Christian Elder. Mark Green piloted the No. 38 for one season before general manager, Doug Stringer, hired up-and-coming talent, Kasey Kahne, thereby solidifying Great Clips’ commitment to their NASCAR sponsorship.

Kahne on racing at Watkins Glen International this weekend

“Watkins Glen has always been a so-so track for me. We’ve had decent runs on the Cup side, but don’t really have the solid finishes to show for it. The Great Clips team has done some road course testing this year, so hopefully that will give us an advantage when we unload on Friday.”

No. 31 BRANDT Chevrolet News and Notes

Weekend Rewind: Iowa II – The BRANDT team returned to Iowa Speedway for their second of two races at the Newton-based track with plans to improve upon their sixth-place finish they earned earlier in the season. They did just that, with Justin Allgaier running in the top-five throughout the entire 250-lap race and leading 101 laps, the most of any driver in the event. Unfortunately, Allgaier had to spend the final 50 laps chasing Elliott Sadler and couldn’t quite catch him. The runner-up finish was Allgaier’s highest of the season and keeps him fifth in the NASCAR Nationwide Series (NNS) driver point standings, 78 points behind the leader.

Allgaier at Watkins Glen – Allgaier has made three previous starts at The Glen and has an average start of 20.0 and an average finish of 21.0. His highest finish came last season where he took the checkers in 12th after starting 13th.

Season In Review – The BRANDT team has had a solid year thus far in the 2012 season. Through 20 NNS starts, the team has notched four top-five and 13 top-10 finishes, with 134 laps led, most of them coming last weekend in Iowa. Allgaier boasts an average starting position of 10.8 coupled with an average finish of 10.9.

Making Moves – Allgaier has continued to score solid finishes through the summer months. Two of the Illinois-native’s last three races have resulted in top-five finishes. As a result, he trails only Sam Hornish Jr. in points gained over the last 10 races. Allgaier has 374 and Hornish is credited with 379.

This Week’s Impala – This weekend, Allgaier will drive TMS-305 in the Zippo 200 at The Glen. This is a brand new road course chassis for the BRANDT team and it will turn its first laps at Watkins Glen this weekend.

Allgaier on heading to Upstate New York:

“Even though road courses really aren’t necessarily my strong suit, I’m definitely excited to get up to Watkins Glen this weekend. It’s going to be a challenge, but one I think the BRANDT team is ready for. We’re taking a new car up there and I will have a couple of good teammates in Kasey Kahne and Miguel Paludo that I can talk things over with. Not only that, but I think that Jimmy [Elledge, crew chief] is one of the best in the business in terms of calling a road course race. I have all the faith in the world that we can get a solid finish this weekend.”

MIGUEL PALUDO QUICK FACTS

No. 30 Duroline Brakes and Components Chevrolet News and Notes

New York State of Mind… Brazilian driver Miguel Paludo will make his second career NASCAR Nationwide Series (NNS) start in this weekend’s 200-mile race at Watkins Glen International, where he will pilot the No. 30 Chevrolet Impala. Paludo has never set foot on the property of the 2.54-mile road course in Watkins Glen, N.Y., but he showed his road-racing prowess earlier in the season when he qualified ninth and led four laps in his first trip to Road America. Paludo ran up front for much of the day before a broken sway-bar arm took him out of contention for the win in the closing laps.

Man in Black… With a new NNS car number comes a new look for Paludo and the Duroline Brakes and Components crew. The familiar primary color scheme will go black, neon red and electric blue for Saturday’s Zippo 200 at The Glen. In addition to long-time primary sponsor, Duroline, the scheme will feature Paludo’s Twitter and Facebook handles on the TV panel, and his website, MiguelPaludo.com, on the deck lid.

Atop the Box… For the first time in 2012, Paludo will have a different voice calling the shots from atop the pit box in Watkins Glen. Paludo will work with regular No. 30 NNS crew chief Trent Owens this weekend. Owens led Nelson Piquet Jr. to victory lane in the driver’s Road America debut earlier this season. Paludo’s full-time NASCAR Camping World Truck Series (NCWTS) crew chief Mike Hillman Jr. will be close at hand as well, as he will also be making the trip to The Glen to support his driver.

Diabetes Fact of the Week… Periodontal (gum) disease is more common in people with diabetes. Among young adults, those with diabetes have about twice the risk of those without diabetes. Adults aged 45 years or older with poorly controlled diabetes are 2.9 times more likely to have severe periodontitis than those without diabetes. The likelihood is even greater (4.6 times) among smokers with poorly controlled diabetes.

This Week’s Impala… The No. 30 team will unload chassis TMS-303 this weekend at Watkins Glen. This is the same chassis Paludo raced in his NNS debut at Road America earlier this season. Paludo qualified within the top-10 and was a strong competitor throughout the day until a late-race sway-bar arm failure resulted in a 29th-place finish

Paludo on this weekend’s NNS race at Watkins Glen

“I am really excited to be racing at Watkins Glen. I’ve never been to that track before, but I was so incredibly comfortable in the Nationwide car at Road America. We were running up front all day and we just had some bad luck at the end when the sway-bar arm broke, so we didn’t get the finish we deserved. I just want to turn that all around and have a good weekend at The Glen. I know that we will be extremely competitive, so I want to bring home a great finish for the team, for myself and for Duroline. I had so much fun road course racing earlier in the year, so I’m really pumped about this.”
